PJM on TNR

Posted by Bill

I have no love for Beauchamp, and even less for The New Republic's credulousness, potential nepotism, fact-checking and subsequent stonewalling, but isn't this expose on the Baghdad Diarist a bit, er, uh, unsubtle? The diagnosis of Beauchamp as a "sociopath" in a "report," based on the testimony of a jilted ex-fiance, is a particular overreach.

The piece does introduce interesting new information, but I half-expected to read "Rita Skeeter" on the byline.*

* Not because of any fabrication, rather the British tabloid-like tone.

UPDATE: I've received two e-mails along these lines:

The Miniter article had the TNR literary editor [Wieseltier] calling [Beauchamp] a sociopath, not the ex-GF.

To clarify, my complaint isn't that the ex-fiance labels Beauchamp a sociopath (which she does not) - it's that the Pajamas Media piece does. The relevant passage and bolded fragment:

The Monday after the party, at the magazine's offices, Foer was locked in a long serious conversation with Leon Wieseltier, the bear-shaped intellectual who has run the magazine's literary section with distinction since 1983. They were talking about Beauchamp. Foer couldn't understand why anyone would just make things up.

Wieseltier did. "Maybe he [Beauchamp] is a sociopath."

As new details about Beauchamp's strange private life emerged, Wieseltier's initial assessment would prove to be on target. [Followed by the section with testimony by the ex-fiance]

This reads to me like Richard Miniter (the author of the PJM piece) is diagnosing Beauchamp as a sociopath. It's heavy-handed for a report, even if it were to be true. And please note that this is just one specific aspect that led me to the impression that Miniter's report is "unsubtle." Shrug.

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey is of like mind:

Also, while people may find long-range indirect psychoanalysis interesting, especially as conducted through a woman scorned, it really has little to do with Beauchamp's fabrications. Priscilla's assertion that Beauchamp married Reeve to get ahead in his career as a writer is sheer speculation even on her part, and certainly unworthy of serious journalism. Bloggers would get called out on that sort of straightforward assertion. Priscilla is obviously hurt that Beauchamp quit calling her, and Miniter says that he's "repeating this behavior" by not calling the press now. It's silly, gossippy, unsubstantiated, and completely off point. What matters is whether Beauchamp told the truth, and what TNR did that allowed his fabulism to taint their publication.

This is by far the oddest left/right argument I've ever seen - made even more so by the duration of the debate.

The Left: This guy and his pals kill dogs, desecrate corpses, and abuse women!

The Right: This guy is a liar!

I'd love to put the issue to rest by having him answer the question: "Do you and your pals kill dogs, desecrate corpses, and insult women, or are you a liar?"

Though I suppose the circular arguments that would ensue from his claim to be a liar would never cease.

BTW Bill, I heard somewhere you might be Iraq-bound. If so, email me, let's do lunch.
