The "Let's Only Build Bridges to 'Somewheres' Act"

Posted by Bill

I've been MIA on this campaign, but hearty congrats to the Porkbusters for their terrier-like and ultimately successful lobby of the Coburn-Obama Bill. This effort has represented bi-partisan, 21st Century citizen advocacy at its finest.

Another cause celebre that I can't get behind.

Entitlement spending is like 1.2 trillion dollars, total discretionary non-military is only 21 billion, with no evidence that the bulk of it is even being misspent.

Sounds like people are putting effort to fix a scratch, when we ahve a major wound that needs attention.

The only part I like about it is the additional accountability and transparency, which may (just possibly) reduce the number of Abramoff type scandals in the future.

Just don't sell it as "we're going to fix our budget problems." That's just BS.

1. Who is claiming that it "will fix our budget problems"?

2. I think that a few billion dollars are significant, but aside from the total dollar figure, there are also the effects of institutionalized bribery among our legislators, as well as disruption of the free market. This has a larger impact on both the way our government works, as well as distorting and diminishing our economy via subsidies.

So what does "Porkbusters" imply to you other than an effort for fiscal restraint?

You aren't going quite that far (others act like it , but even in cases like the "bridge to nowhere" you really haven't made the case that the money is wastefully spent. If the "bridge to nowhere" increases tourism (and hence income and hence Federal tax receipts), then it is probably not a boondoggle.

Part of the problem here is we are a republic. This means that spending authority at some level is divided up among the congressmen so that those who know the most are the ones who make the final decisions. I think that is a much more desirable system than having a central committee decide what is better for each specific subregion.
