Hypocrisy, Thy Name is Olbermann
Posted by Dorkafork From a transcript of his most recent rant (via Crooks and Liars): "In the 1920's a failed Austrian painter published a book in which he explained his intention to build an Aryan super-state in Germany and take revenge on Europe and eradicate the Jews," President Bush said today, "the world ignored Hitler's words, and paid a terrible price."
I wonder if the Democrats will use that idea in a slogan for upcoming elections. "Comparisons of Osama to Hitler are beyond the pale, and yes, we are tough on terrorism." (The Bush speech in question actually contains a pretty good description of al Qaeda's goals.) Seriously, everytime I get fed up with Bush and his crew and actually start to consider the left side of the political aisle, along comes something like Olbermann. Bush makes mistakes, spends too much and I dislike his blurring of the lines of federalism, but at least he's serious about our national security. The Dems don't even have that. Ugh. Posted by: rbj at September 6, 2006 01:46 PM I've been pretty amused by the reality-based community's position on this. "When we compare a US president to Hitler and US Marines to the SS at wartime it's fine, but Bush is way out of line comparing anti-semitic mass murderers to Nazis." OK. Noted. Posted by: SeanH at September 6, 2006 07:15 PM I don't even like Hitler analogies, since they are so horribly, horribly overused. At least Bush's reference was somewhat specific. Bush was discussing OBL's statements and how important it was to pay attention to them. And he didn't just compare him to Hitler. Now, I know some of our country hear the terrorists' words, and hope that they will not, or cannot, do what they say. History teaches that underestimating the words of evil and ambitious men is a terrible mistake. In the early 1900s, an exiled lawyer in Europe published a pamphlet called "What Is To Be Done?" -- in which he laid out his plan to launch a communist revolution in Russia. The world did not heed Lenin's words, and paid a terrible price. The Soviet Empire he established killed tens of millions, and brought the world to the brink of thermonuclear war. In the 1920s, a failed Austrian painter published a book in which he explained his intention to build an Aryan super-state in Germany and take revenge on Europe and eradicate the Jews. The world ignored Hitler's words, and paid a terrible price. His Nazi regime killed millions in the gas chambers, and set the world aflame in war, before it was finally defeated at a terrible cost in lives. That analogy is only about a thousand times more sophisticated than those of his critics. Posted by: dorkafork at September 6, 2006 08:43 PM dude i saw keith olbermann just now and he is totally bummed by your piece. Posted by: alexander at September 7, 2006 01:20 AM I'd like to know how Olbermann keeps himself from poisoning himself with his own surfeit of irony. That amount would kill an ordinary idiot. I tried - I really tried to listen to Olberman a few times, but after a few minutes I find myself looking around the house for a rope and something high to throw it over - when I caught myself and turned it off. Seriously, the guy is unfunny - unoriginal - and a ratings loser. The only reason he is still on is because O'Reilly needs a schoolyard "wussy" to beat up on every night. Give it up, KO - your horrible.
