Overheard on the Elevator

Posted by Bill

A tall woman and a short man enter the elevator, the woman yelling to another woman down the hall, "I've got a rental car for you!" as the doors close.

The man says to the woman, "You're giving away rental cars?"

"No, I'm a travel agent too."

"Wow, you must be busy with two jobs," says the man.

"Yeah, I've got to support my kids. I have an eleven year-old who is taller than you."

The man subtly twitches, an uncomfortable silence falls over the elevator, I choke back laughter, and the woman tries to soften her statement:

"Well, but ... have you seen pictures of my daughter? She's really tall!"

See, this is where I fail as a human being. I'd have laughed out loud.

For the longest time I was becoming depressed over my fellow human beings, but then I realized the only reason I'm even remotely congenial is because I have kids to support and doing even a tenth of the shit that runs through my mind would have me in jail / dead within a week.

there was really no witty comeback for the guy that time.

"thanks for calling me a midget, that was kind."

Even funnier? He and I are roughly the same height.

And I still found his pain amusing.

Well, being 6'3" I guess my snickering wouldn't have had the same effect.

If she'd said that to me, I would have wept for her freakishly tall daughter.

I wish I had your restraint. I was that short guy once on an elevator at work (heading back to the office with a co-worker) when a new employee got on and said, without preamble, "Wow, my 12-year-old is taller than you!" My immediate response was a very mean, "Yeah, OK, but I bet he's unbelievably stupid; Oh! or does he take after his father?"

My co-worker doubled up in laughter. And I had to make a trip to HR.
