... and always "Remember the Maine!" Marble envisions a "successory" motivational poster for the NYT. Posted by Bill at August 8, 2006 09:06 PM | TrackBack (2) Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsYea, you really got them Bill. Good job. That NY Times liberal rag, what a disgrace! I guess they must have learned something from the fake news stories that the Pentagon planted last December? You remember, those feel-good stories that never happened? Posted by: Vaughn D. Taylor at August 9, 2006 12:06 AM I linked from Old War Dogs >> “Fauxtography” Posted by: Bill Faith Once again Vaughn, you swing wild. Whether you agree with the Pentagon waging information warfare or not, and I sense that you have a problem with it, the military is not an ostensibly objective news organization, whereas the New York Times is. "the Fourth Estate." The people that serve to keep an eye on organizations like the Pentagon and inform the public. Bottom line: the behavior of the Pentagon has nothing to do with the NYT responsibility as a newspaper, and even less than nothing to do with this post. So it's pretty weak that the best that you can come up with is a non sequitur that somehow defends the Times with distracting condemnation of the journalistic ethics of a non-news organization, wrapped in a snarky personal attack on my judgment and perceived politics. Shrug. Posted by: Bill from INDC at August 9, 2006 08:22 AM Non sequitur? Both are propaganda with a purpose -- to sway the opinions of the American people. I'm not defending the NY Times for this crap. I just think it's ridiculous that those on the right (and apparently those in the middle, Bill) have such a hard-on for this news organization. Compare their reporting, side-by-side, with other "legitimate" news organizations -- ie. Fox. I will search your site for a reference to Fox -- are there any? They make up news on a daily basis -- are you bothered by that? Frankly, every estate -- including the 4th -- has let us down since 2001. You've claimed to be the "canary in the coalmine" with your centrist views -- do you sense a change coming? Posted by: Vaughn Taylor at August 9, 2006 09:37 AM Both are propaganda with a purpose -- to sway the opinions of the American people. Actually, the program that you reference was targeted at swaying opinions in the Middle East. So you make further mirepresentative and inaccurate arguments. Did you learn that from ... from ... the Pentagon?! (dum-dum-DUM!) I just think it's ridiculous that those on the right (and apparently those in the middle, Bill) have such a hard-on for this news organization. See above: news organization vs. military organization. The NYT' non-objectivity compromises its coverage when said non-objectivity leads it to feature sensationalistic and false stories and staged pictures. This violates one of its fundamental operating assumptions and purposes. I have an interest in journalism and media critique, so it's something that I often write about. I will search your site for a reference to Fox -- are there any? They make up news on a daily basis Another distracting, hyperbolic assessment. What do they "make up ... on a daily basis?" Or are you referring to the political lean of the organization? When I critique the NYT, I often do so specifically, and would never claim that they "make up news on a daily basis." I also laud the Washington Post frequently, btw., another one of them "liberal" newspapers. And the only Fox News that I ever watch is Special Report. I will search your site for a reference to Fox -- are there any? Here's an analysis of Brit Hume's misrepresentative quote on FDR's social security position: http://www.indcjournal.com/archives/001572.php Here's a critique of Fox attributing fake quotes to Kerry, which were stupid jokes by the reporter in draft text: http://www.indcjournal.com/archives/001053.php Frankly, every estate -- including the 4th -- has let us down since 2001. Another symptom of your selectively negative worldview. History didn't somehow start going downhill when you started paying attention, nor when a politician that you didn't like was elected, nor when a terrorist attack happened in the US. You've claimed to be the "canary in the coalmine" with your centrist views -- do you sense a change coming? An overall political argument not related to the above post ... that said, I think the GOP will lose seats, but not necessarily as many as the consensus is intimating. But I could be wrong. Posted by: Bill from INDC at August 9, 2006 09:59 AM Nice reply, Bill. Non-sequitors and strawmen; how the far-left argues anything outside their view. Incredible that they can't see it in themselves even whilst they accuse everyone else of the same. My prediction is that the next one will argue that it's OK to fake pics because things really are that bad over there, so a representative pic is just fine. My question: why couldn't the NYT's best photographer take a pic that was genuinely horrific instead of going along with an obvious stage job? Not that I'm arguing it's not that bad over there, but c'mon. What's Tyler Hicks doing that he couldn't get the pic he wanted when there's chaos all around? Maybe Hicks is getting lazy... Posted by: Scoob the ny times has posted a correction trying to weasel out of this. (see latest update:) A picture caption with an audio slide show on July 27 about an Israeli attack on a building in Tyre, Lebanon, imprecisely described the situation in the picture. The man pictured, who had been seen in previous images appearing to assist with the rescue effort, was injured during that rescue effort, not during the initial attack, and was not killed. The correct description was this one, which appeared with that picture in the printed edition of The Times: After an Israeli airstrike destroyed a building in Tyre, Lebanon, yesterday, one man helped another who had fallen and was hurt. Posted by: milowent at August 9, 2006 01:39 PM "Actually, the program that you reference was targeted at swaying opinions in the Middle East." So, it's not propaganda if it is waged in another country? Was there any propaganda foisted on American people by this administration? Any ongoing reports from the White House about how peachy things are in Iraq, while the commanders on the the ground are calling it a civil war? "Or are you referring to the political lean of the organization?" Yes, I'm referrring to the political lean of the organization which pretends to be "fair and balanced". It is neither fair nor balanced, and you know it. If you want to talk about a dis-service to the American people, you at least need to speak about FOX. But, that's not the topic of your post is it? Well, instead of breaking away from the topic, I will pile on. Whoever allowed the photos in question to be posted is a moron at best. But, overall, I trust the NY Times to report with accuracy more than I trust FOX. "History didn't somehow start going downhill when you started paying attention, nor when a politician that you didn't like was elected, nor when a terrorist attack happened in the US" Now you're just being a wise-ass. So, are you happy you voted for Bush? When, in your assessment, did politics BEGIN to go down hill? Name a time in recent U.S. history when things have been so screwed up by one administration. "strawmen" You mean like blaming the NY Times for releasing certain "classified" information that was not classified -- SWIFT. Everybody who didn't have their head up their ass knew that this administration was tracking financial transactions. This administration wrote the book on manipulation -- it's really no surprise that these organzations are borrowing from BushCo's playbook. Posted by: Vaughn D. Taylor at August 9, 2006 06:00 PM So, it's not propaganda if it is waged in another country? I didn't at all make that argument (in fact explicitly labeled it "propaganda" in the previous comment), I simply corrected your fundamental misstatement. I also didn't bother reading the rest of your comment after that line, as you're having prohibitive problems with civility, argumentative coherence and logic. Posted by: Bill from INDC at August 9, 2006 06:25 PM I loce how Vaughan can skirt around any issue like Patton skitring a German tank column. Intellectual honesty...sometimes it's just to painful. Posted by: Jason at August 9, 2006 09:46 PM So is good spelling. Posted by: Jason at August 9, 2006 09:47 PM "in fact explicitly labeled it "propaganda" in the previous comment" I looked for your previous comment where you labeled it [the Pentagon's program] "propaganda" but I was unable to find it. But, who cares. Go ahead and continue to beat up the NY Times if you're having a good time. You obviously believe it somehow represents the left, otherwise you wouldn't bother posting these things. News can be slow when nearly every f-ed up thing that happens is coming from the party you support[ed?] Posted by: Vaughn D. Taylor at August 10, 2006 11:13 PM Ah you got me: I changed "propaganda" to "waging information warfare," when I revised the comment, though they are the same thing. You think "propaganda" is terrible, given how it's commonly used as a loaded term. In war, imo, it's a simple responsibility of a military trying to win. As far as this ... Go ahead and continue to beat up the NY Times if you're having a good time. You obviously believe it somehow represents the left, otherwise you wouldn't bother posting these things. Yeah, because I never criticize the right. You see everything in this cartoonish right-left divide, and project that worldview on to everyone else. Aggressively. Kind of lame. Wholly tedious.
