Altered Reuters Pic Smoking Gun

Posted by Dorkafork

For those interested:

This is a combination of the true original and the altered version.*

What the guy did, and what you can see from the picture above, is try to "sex up" the picture a little bit. He first tried to make the pillar of smoke on the left longer, and lengthened it by using the clone stamp tool. That is why the extra building appears diagonally. To make it painfully obvious:

Not only does this definitively show the picture was altered from that original, it shows exactly how it was altered. The clone stamp was used starting at the bottom left to lengthen the pillar of smoke, and then to add more smoke near the top.

* Not made by me, found via oseaghdha in the comments at protein wisdom. If anyone knows who made it, let me know and I'll give proper credit.

OK, now I understand why the horizon is higher in the faked version.

Well done.

NOW it's obvious to me. I wonder how many other pictures this guy has also enhanced, and how many other photographers do the same thing.

I'm going to send a note to Reuters to ask them to retract ALL the doctored, and staged photos.

This likely isn't the first time he's done this. I see this as a long-time photo manipulator finally manipulating one-too-many photos. Let's hope there is a lengthy and deep investigation of this fraud and also of Reuters' editors for approving such a blatantly obvious fake.

Is it just me, or does it seem that Reuters came up with the unaltered original rather quickly once the cat was out of the bag?

How does a photographer in a war zone have access to photoshop?

Posted by: Foster at August 7, 2006 07:56 PM

The photographer lives there. He probably just took the pictures and sexed 'em up on his home PC.
