*** Another addendum to my post arguing the diminishing utility of "total war:"

Microbes Made From Scratch
Custom-built pathogens raise bioterror fears as new technology is hurtling past countermeasures.

Sleep tight!

*** Christopher Hitchens napalms Mel Gibson:

Mel Gibson's Meltdown
He is sick to his empty core with Jew-hatred.

But how do you really feel, Hitch?

*** Chemical detail on the Floyd Landis doping test:

The first thing an anti-doping lab looks for in such a case is the ratio of testosterone to the isomeric epitestosterone - too high an imbalance is physiologically unlikely and arouses suspicion. Landis already is in trouble from that reading, but the subject of the Times scoop is the isotopic ratio of the testosterone itself. And that one is going to be hard to get away from, if it's true.

Mmmmmm, isotopic ratio of testosterone. Mmmmmmm.

*** The Flea gets wordy:

The fact** is we mortals must engage in acts of judgement and discrimination if we are to get on with each other even as me must not mistake our own preconceptions and prejudices for the hard work of real judgement. I believe the best way to go about this is to teach people how to think. I believe we should also teach people the histories and legends from which we might find a common pool of metaphor upon which to draw analogies in communicating our thoughts to one another. The trick is how to go about the process when most teachers from Pashto madrassas to the Ivy League have decided to forgo learning how to think by preference to mouthing a tiny spectrum of received cant.

Religion? Politics? Blogs? Everything, baby.

And a bonus - hot on the heels of my reference yesterday ...

When everything from slavery to sexual mutilation to rape of children as political theatre to gay lynchings to calls for another Shoah must now be "understood" and not condemned it would seem the Prime Directive has much to answer for.

... Sir Nicholas hits us with another PD reference, thereby shoring up the geek mythology that the entirety of human experience is summarized in South Park, Star Trek and the Simpsons (also mentioned) episodes.

So, I take it you and Flea aren't subscribers to the "I've got a bat, now do you still have a problem?" approach to interpersonal relationships, eh?

Wow...I won't have gotten to this point, however. When such atrocities become tolerated, I may just dig myself a hole in Minnesota and mulch.
