Condemnation Nation
Posted by Dorkafork Many bloggers are talking about whether anyone is obligated to denounce others whose only connection involves sharing certain beliefs. They essentially make the point that there is no obligation to do so. (A point made on this very site. This post by Mindles H. Dreck is a particularly funny take.) The general consensus seems to be that although it may be admirable to do so, it is not an obligation. It doesn't say anything larger about whether "my side" is more virtuous than "your side." Sweeping generalizations of people who share certain beliefs should not be based on a perceived lack of condemnation of others with whom they otherwise have no other connection. Unless, of course, you're talking about Islam. Then it's ok to make those kind of criticisms, and even contemplate genocide. Bill Adds: I can't be certain, but I have the suspicion that dorkafork is using sarcasm about the Islam thing. I'm certainly not obligated by the Bible to publicly condemn anyone. Private counsel to a brother (blood, political, spirtual, whatever) is private and similar to "go and sin no more," but where is it written that one is obligated to publicly condemn anyone, be he stranger or brother? Besides, those who seek your public condemnation of a brother don't always have your best interest at heart. See John 8:3-11. Posted by: w3 at July 14, 2006 09:06 AM Thanks for that last bit. Ace's site is rapidly turning into a fetid sewer where LGF reprobates hang out. I love how having the temerity to suggest that lumping all Muslims together and declaring war on all 1.2 billion of them is probably not the best strategic decision means that you are "living in happy land". Do I look happy to you? Posted by: Jason at July 14, 2006 12:04 PM Hippie. Posted by: Bill from INDC at July 14, 2006 12:57 PM The denunciation game is a trap. You can't possibly denounce all expressions with which you disagree, and if you begin with the presumption that denouncing is appropriate, then any time you fail to denounce, whether through ignorance of what was said, inability to immediately respond, laziness, etc., you are screwed. The other side will say "I've noticed Blogger X will denounce other bloggers when he strongly disagrees with their statements, therefore his failure to denounce Blogger Y on this topic must mean he agrees with the statement." Posted by: Thom I liked Ace of Spades HQ better when it was just all about hating Bill. Posted by: Sortelli at July 16, 2006 05:08 AM As mentioned above, the gambit is a silly one - but it must also be condemned for false equivalence.
