On Choosing Arguments

Posted by Bill

Regarding the discovery of the remains of those two kidnapped soldiers, a bit of Dan Rhiel's post echoes my thoughts:

And it's unclear what it is that needs be said by anyone, other than how terribly sad a day today is, even without the usual suspects determined to see every tragic event as simply more fodder for the political grist mill.

Rest in peace, and sympathetic thoughts for their families.

Don't know if you're up for it but we could use you over here.

Posted by: Allah at June 20, 2006 07:20 PM

No offense, enjoy the site, but the comments section is a lost cause.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at June 20, 2006 07:30 PM

And I have no idea what your policy is over there, but bloodthirsty calls to murder civilians might strike one as a banning offense. My God, some of those people are scum.

Don't know how else to put it.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at June 20, 2006 07:36 PM

I wouldn't know where to start, frankly.

Posted by: Allah at June 20, 2006 08:07 PM

Yeah, I feel that.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at June 20, 2006 08:11 PM

What is up with the registration over there, Allah?

Posted by: B Moe at June 20, 2006 08:33 PM

What about it, B? You want in?

I'll set you up with an account if so. But spare me if you're planning on joining the carpet-bomb chorus. We've got enough of those.

Posted by: Allah at June 20, 2006 08:38 PM

Time for Claymoes attached to the sides of Humvees. Good anti-swarm devices.

Posted by: davod at June 20, 2006 08:57 PM

I would like in, yeah. And I prefer surgical strikes of known targets, in comments and real wars.

Posted by: B Moe at June 20, 2006 09:49 PM

I'd be willing to give it a shot if you set me up, Allah. Can't say I'd be polite, but at least you'd have one more voice of sanity.

Posted by: dorkafork at June 20, 2006 09:57 PM

Ah, excellent, gents. I appreciate it. Just e-mail me your preferred login and password and I'll make it happen. My address is allahblog -at- gmail.com.

That offer stands for anyone else here, too. We need more INDC-level commenters over there.

Badly.

Posted by: Allah at June 20, 2006 10:07 PM

I already tried to be the voice of sanity against the "Nuke Mecca" crowd here:

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/182402.php

I think you can see how it turned out.

Nothing like spending your day arguing with liberal idiots in your department and then coming home to realize that the people supposedly on your "side" are just as stupid and viscious.

Posted by: Jason at June 21, 2006 12:50 AM

That's not fair Jason. You caught folks on a bad day and your tone was all off for that crowd. I've said the same things--and did--and didn't hear one word about it.

You're justified in your conclusion but your methodology is suspect and your sample too small.

Posted by: spongeworthy at June 21, 2006 10:32 AM

Allah, Bill and others . . . maybe try a different approach to the Nuke Mecca crowd? Remind them that the soldiers and marines serving their country -- us, that is -- in Iraq are our sons, daughters, brothers and sisters, friends . . . I'm sure at least a few of them have a family member or someone else they care about in the military now. ROE serve a couple of functions. One such function, but obviously not the one foremost in the minds of those who advocate indiscriminate killing, is to protect our sons, daughters, etc. from bearing the burden of such acts when they return home. I wonder how many of the nuke Mecca crowd would wish the purposeful killing of innocents, with or without official sanction, on the conscience of a son or a brother . . .

I would venture that it is their inclination, not just the ROE, that causes most soldiers and marines to risk their own lives rather than harm civilians. That should make us all very proud of them.

"You caught folks on a bad day and your tone was all off for that crowd."

If by my "tone" you mean the temerity to suggest that Muslim's are not inherently evil...then yeah I guess so. I think if you read what I wrote —something most of the people haranguing me could not be bothered with— you will see that I was more reasonable and amenable then was possibly warranted by the situation.

I don't know, maybe you're right. I've never had that problem on ace's site before. But it's disturbing none the less...

er, I have.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at June 21, 2006 01:54 PM

Yeah but sponge is right, it was a bad day.

Posted by: Jason at June 21, 2006 03:16 PM

Whaddya mean,"if you read what I wrote"? Of course I read it. Who do you think pulled those guys off ya?

See, this is what I'm talking about, you coming on all douche-like. It rubs people the wrong way!

/jocularity

Seriously, I think some of those guys drink and post stuff on the Internets. I wouldn't take it too seriously. Unless I was Bill.

Posted by: spongeworthy at June 21, 2006 04:13 PM

I know YOU read what I wrote...you're probably the only one. I was more refering to anyone else who glanced at that thread.

Sorry for the (douche-like) confusion.

Posted by: Jason at June 21, 2006 08:29 PM

Looks like more bad days are coming. Man.

Posted by: dorkafork at June 22, 2006 02:31 AM

No more reading Ace for me. To bad. His blog is funny as hell.

Posted by: Jason at June 22, 2006 02:47 AM

C'mon Jason! Buck up, little soldier! We can beat back the tides of drunken-LGF-Islamo-bluster together, man--I'm right behind you.
