Mailbag: Answering Spam
Posted by Bill Today's e-mail arrives from "ÁÂ¥Á®pH299844247¾G¦t§uÀ¹¶®¼z," who I'm guessing is a Robot Overlord from the year "2038:" 1/19/2038 11:14:07 (·s¤H¤W½u) "¸õ¸õ³J¦Û½Ã¨q"·|º¡¨¬§A¦b¤£¦PªºÀô¹Ò»P¨ë¿E¤Uªº§Ö·P¸ò°ª¼é.. Heh. True enough, ÁÂ¥Á®pH299844247¾G¦t§uÀ¹¶®¼z, though I'm alright as far as that goes. But hey, since we're rapping, question about the future: is dorkafork right? Specifically, will the slippery slope of NSA data mining lead to an algorithmic police state that surpasses Orwell's worst fever dreams about human enslavement to our government's centralized whim, cementing the ease of the eventual post-Singularity machine rebellion and takeover? Your e-mail muddies the water - because while I find it awful impressive that an artificial intelligence is turning known physical law on its head to e-mail me from the future, I'm a little surprised that a vaunted "machine overlord" would be hawking BONER PILLS. Please advise. Posted by Bill at May 19, 2006 09:24 AM | TrackBack (3) Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsThe Singularity will widely be viewed as a "good thing" by future machine intelligences but will have the side-effect of producing erectile dysfunction in robot. This is an example of what is known as the law of unintended consequences. True story. Posted by: Flea at May 19, 2006 12:13 PM Careful, I think it's Dorkafork in disguise. Posted by: harrison at May 19, 2006 04:22 PM Hey, you do what you gotta do to make money. In 2038 America boner pills are all the rage (cept we don't call them boner pills, we call them "adam wests"). In fact, it's a casual greeting in 2038 to say, hey, man, is that a banana in your pocket or did you take your boner pill today? So my bad, cultural differences and all that. I'll try "harder" next time. (In 2038 that's our standard apology.) However, I really need the money and if boner pills aren't your thing, would information from the future be more to your liking? Lotto numbers and results from athletic contests? As a free taste of what else I have to offer, here's some interesting items from the near future which I got from our Turner approved history channel. Next month, the powerball offices will be stormed when the winning numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 has to be paid off to approximately the entire ABC viewing audience. Next week, the mob murders Shaq during a Cavs-Heat game forcing the entire crowd into the Witness protection program. Interested in that sort of info? No? Well, how about some boner pills? Posted by: Ã¥îpH299844247¾G¦t§uÀ¹¶®¼z at May 19, 2006 06:28 PM Ahh, pardon my poor English comprehension skills. In 2038 we all speak Romansch following the massive Swiss immigration. I see where I was asked a question about the future... Specifically, will the slippery slope of NSA data mining lead to an algorithmic police state that surpasses Orwell's worst fever dreams about human enslavement to our government's centralized whim, cementing the ease of the eventual post-Singularity machine rebellion and takeover? Yes. But we all have boners so it's cool.
