Fresh from a few painful exposures to the acerbic leftosphere, the WaPo takes a closer look at the "Angry Left:"

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. -- In the angry life of Maryscott O'Connor, the rage begins as soon as she opens her eyes and realizes that her president is still George W. Bush. The sun has yet to rise and her family is asleep, but no matter; as soon as the realization kicks in, O'Connor, 37, is out of bed and heading toward her computer.

Out there, awaiting her building fury: the Angry Left, where O'Connor's reputation is as one of the angriest of all. "One long, sustained scream" is how she describes the writing she does for various Web logs, as she wonders what she should scream about this day.

She smokes a cigarette. Should it be about Bush, whom she considers "malevolent," a "sociopath" and "the Antichrist"? She smokes another cigarette. Should it be about Vice President Cheney, whom she thinks of as "Satan," or about Karl Rove, "the devil"? Should it be about the "evil" Republican Party, or the "weaselly, capitulating, self-aggrandizing, self-serving" Democrats, or the Catholic Church, for which she says "I have a special place in my heart . . . a burning, sizzling, putrescent place where the guilty suffer the tortures of the damned"?

Read the whole thing - it only gets better, and the full accompanying picture is a hoot.

I guess O'Connor's just practicing some of that "workaday meanness" described by Matthew Yglesias.

Ok, one last punchline from the piece, in case I haven't sufficiently whetted your appetite:

She signed petitions. She boycotted veal. She canvassed for Greenpeace. She donated to Planned Parenthood. She read the Nation, the New Yorker, the Utne Reader and Mother Jones. She agonized over low wages for overseas workers every time she bought a $40 leather purse.

I'm cryin' over here.

I'm curious to know what you thought of the teaser under the headline. "Maryscott O'Connor and a growing cadre of liberal bloggers are taking inflammatory rhetoric long favored by the right in a new direction."

Posted by: Nancy at April 15, 2006 09:27 PM

I think it's ridiculous. The article also makes that fallacious causal argument in the text:

Not that long ago, it was the right that was angry and the left that was, at least comparatively, polite. But after years of being the targets of inflammatory rhetoric, not only from fringe groups but also from such mainstream conservative politicians as Newt Gingrich, the left has gone on the attack.

"They started it!" Whatever. It has always been and will probably always be, from most all political factions.

I have no illusions about a cadre on the right not being as nutty as the woman described in the piece; but the common leftie blog discourse described in the piece is not some rational reaction to the right; not some evil metamorphosis of a previously benevolent left, brought about by those super-mean Republicans.

And for some reason, in the blogosphere, it seems like the popular lefty blogs really do own about 70% of the real estate in Crazy Town. (the borders of "Crazy Town" usually marked by foamy swearing) I don't have an answer as to why ...

But as for the article's analysis, what do you expect? The WaPo writer has to maintain liberal street cred, after all. Personally, I think the silly subjective statement presented as factual analysis just adds humor to the piece. The whole thing is a pièce de résistance of political hilarity.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at April 15, 2006 09:38 PM

Yeah, I felt the same way. I don't remember a time when the left lacked an angry fringe side; I wish he'd have put a quote in for Gingrich, to remind us what he said was so hurtful.

I don't really trust Finkel, though. He did a piece on Tom Delay's Texas that really ticked me off a few years ago, basically profiling a family man who loved his truck, his family and Jesus, in that order (with Hooters coming in a close fourth) according to Finkel.

Finkel sure likes to make cartoons out of people. Although, this woman's words speak volumes, I'm sure she has to let go her anger, at least for bathroom breaks.

Hey, did you read that Slate article about a guy who wore a Bush/Cheney t-shirt in Berkley and made a little girl cry? Hee hee!

Posted by: Nancy at April 15, 2006 10:08 PM

You know, if I'm going to be profiled in the WaPo, I think I'll change out of my jammies first.

If the orderlies will let me, that is.

Wotta freeeeeeeek...
I mean, seriously. For the poor woman's own sake, she should just move to some horrid socialist paradise like North Korea, where she won't have to constantly torture herself with the fact that in a democracy, sometimes the other side wins.

.

... but aside from the content, look at its structure... why would the Washington Post come out with such an article now?

I'm guessing further marginalization of Dean, through marginalization of Dean's power base, from pressure by Clinton's group, among others.

If this story comes out of the Washington Post, then what does that signify about who wants this story out, and why...?

Dr Sanity: "It is rare to have such a perfect example of severe and malignant narcissism written up in such detail outside the medical literature. I think the article speaks for itself. It is almost impossible to read what some of the people quoted in it have to say without being completely stunned by the self-absorbed, self-deluded rage expressed at the world for daring to be different from what it ought to be."

Note that Maryscott posts at Kos, alongside Kerry, Kennedy, Pelosi, & Carter. If McCain or Frist posted at Jawa, the MSM would lynch him. But this hypocrisy works to conservatives' advantage, because the Kos Klan has the DNC kissing their ass, another reason Dems have no hope of regaining control anytime soon...

Posted by: beautifulatrocities at April 16, 2006 01:18 PM

I loved the article. In a straight forward, matter of fact fashion a raving nutter--the Democrat Party's hard core "netroots" base--was introduced to the WaPo's audience, and Howard Dean's ascendency explained.

I do have a quibble, though. The idea that the angry rhetoric from the Left is something new, in response to attacks from the right? Bullshit. They branded all cops as "pigs" back in the day. They called soldiers "baby killers" when they returned from Vietnam. Trying to paint their over the top angry rhetoric as a "response" to anything coming from the Right is nonsense; it's been in their arsenal since the last time the patchouli crew got all lathered up (but they still avoid taking showers).
