"if followed to the letter." There's your distinction. OF COURSE religion (a good deal of them) followed "to the letter" can be a force for bad; it's called "radical fundamentalism." "Inquisition, Spanish") But what's amusing about that idea is that Islam itself is contradictory; you can follow elements to the letter and do awfully damn evil things, and follow other elements to the letter and contradict them.

And also terribly evil, when followed to the letter, is the Old Testament. Terribly evil. And so, even, are a few New Testament edicts that were written in the context of a different era (though comparably MUCH less so, as Jesus was a total hippie).

The letter of religion is only practically valid through human interpretation, which is tempered by culture and era. And defining Islam as a force for evil is directly contradictory to respect for the 50 million people liberated by the United States, especially since the religion:

A. Defines identity in that part of the world.

B. Contains enough inherent contradiction to lend itself sufficiently to interpretation through culture.
