Posted by Bill Muslim cartoon protestors apparently suffer from "scope-creep:" KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 8 -- Like tens of thousands of protesters this week, the crowd that gathered Wednesday in the southern Afghan town of Qalat came to speak out against cartoons in European newspapers mocking the prophet Muhammad. And this blogger answers: There are extremists who play this controversy for their advantage, and by turning the west against all Muslims, they win. We don't. UPDATE: Jim Geraghty at TKS: You realize we’ve reached a point where if a Muslim denounces violence in protesting the cartoons, two groups of people will step forward to insist that this individual is no longer an “authentic Muslim.” One group is the Muslims who believe violence in the name of defending their faith is justified… and the other group is critics of Islam who believe all practitioners of the faith are inherently violent. And he adds in an e-mail: A strange agreement, but I guess it shouldn't be all that surprising. Both sides agree that coexistence between the West and Islam is impossible, and that a clash of civilizations is inevitable. But what really unnerves me is how enthusiastic each side is for this grand conflict. Like, not getting beheaded or thrown in a government jail, with their jubblies hooked up to a car battery by a civil service torturer. Remember, much of these efforts are organized by government goon squads. I'm not saying that much of this sentiment doesn't have easily radicalized populist appeal among large swaths of the Islamic world, but organizing counter protests in the countries with the most trouble isn't quite as easy as printing up Code Pink flyers and planting wooden crescents outside the President's ranch. And in the areas that others have taken the bait, the extent to which we buy in and call it a war against Islam doesn't help defuse the momentum urged on by Syrian Baathists, Al qaeda and Iranian mullahs. It's my understanding that the cartoons were published to show the difficulty a Danish writer had with getting illustrators for a book, as artists were afraid of getting their heads lopped off by Islamists. The cartoons have been subsequently published by other newspapers to either stand up for freedom of expression or to merely display the newsworthy art. I've also read that some of the cartoons were originally published in Egypt prior to the controversy. So what exactly is it that I don't know? Intolerance and violence are deeply embedded in the DNA of Islam. I wish this were not true. I wish Islam were just a sort of Christianity with a turban. I'm hoping that Muslims can find a way to reform their religion. I'm hoping that experiments like Iraq can break ground for genuinely moderate Islam, but I have my doubts, because the problems we face today are not merely the result of a virulent political movement grafted on to Islam.
