"Fat" is not "good," or "bad," per say, though a diet that is very, very low in fat is certainly bad for you. It's all about the types of fat you eat, and in what proportions. Posted by: rbj at February 8, 2006 12:46 PM Many things are good for you in certain amounts, bad for you in others. Moderate red wine consumption is exceedingly good for you; why it's bad for you in excess is pretty obvious. Coffee is ok for you - with moderate antioxidant benefits, metabolic stimulation and diabetes-fighting effects - but fairly bad for you in excess quantities (addiction, insomnia, impotence, excess cortisol stimulation). Green or white tea is a much better option (lower caffeine, POWERFUL anti-oxidant effects). The problem, as always, lies with binary interpretations of complex information. It's an Atkins no-no because of the sugars but lots of people think that the gut flora can solve all sorts of problems. I typically eat about a cup of plain yogurt (no flavors, not reduced or no-fat) for breakfast. Posted by: djm at February 8, 2006 02:12 PM Yogurt is great, from what I've read: friendly bacterial cultures ward off cancer and reduce acid levels in your, uh, plumbing, as well as boosting the immune system, being rich in calcium, etc. That said, I don't eat much of it, just because I haven't bothered. If you dig yogurt, you're probably best off buying the plain kind (as you do) with the lowest sugar content that you can find, as it doesn't have added sugar like the "mandarin coffee cheesecake-flavored" variety. But I'm hardly well versed in yogurt nutrition. Now salmon and walnuts, that I could gab about all day. And it would be EXCITING talk, too.
