Not All Bad Advice for Democrats ...

Posted by Bill

... comes from DKos. The oft-reasonable Kevin Drum urges the D's to filibuster Alito:

Would this end up hurting Democrats? It might. And the end result would probably be the spectacle of Bill Frist and Dick Cheney ramming through the "nuclear option" to force debate to a close and install Alito on the Supreme Court regardless.

But in politics, if you only fight when you're sure of victory, you're never going to fight at all.

Uh huh. How about when you're sure of losing?

The centrists (and centrist constituency) that supported the Gang of 14's compromise to avert the nuclear option last May are perfectly willing to let the GOP go "weapons-free" if the Dems are stupid enough to break their pledge and filibuster. Because if the nomination of Ruth Bader-Ginsburg didn't constitute "extraordinairy circumstances" to justify more than 3 negative votes, much less a petulant filibuster, then neither does the nomination of a highly-qualified, if liberal-ideologically unpalatable Samuel Alito. And I say this as a person that doesn't give too much of a whit about Alito either way.

Not to mention, the Dems probably don't even have the votes for a filibuster.

Bad advice, Drum. Feel-good posturing, really.

Last link via Ace, who earlier offered:

Is it just me or is the entire sinestrosphere just goofy? They're in a perpetual contest to out-lefty each other, and, as far as I can tell, it's a forty-thousand-way tie.

And for the record, I think Polipundit ridiculously misses the point with some of the chest-thumping rhetoric found in the link above:

Back when John McCain betrayed his party to form the Gang of Fourteen, the seven Democrat Gang members pledged not to filibuster judicial nominees, except under “extraordinary circumstances.”

Please. That compromise (aka "betrayal") effectively made the nuclear option politically palatable when it really matters, tough-gal; it mutes any blowback spin from a GOP filibuster-nuke, because, "hey, they tried." Plus, the rhetoric is just silly. Silly, I tells ya.

UPDATE: Too funny.

The difference is you don't see Republican presidential candidates opining on Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler or LGF, etc. This week's sinking poll #s for Hillary are the latest indication that the Democratic Party is in serious need of triage

Have you checked Drudge?

Posted by: beautifulatrocities at January 26, 2006 04:33 PM

heh. That's a poor bedfellow.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at January 26, 2006 04:36 PM

Good point ba. The Left has never had a "McCarthy Moment" where they were chastened by losses from nasty rhetoric. Repubs instinctively shy from their extremists, Dems instinctively embrace theirs. Hill gets it, but I'm guessing it will take another 10 years as the minority party before the rest do.

I was amazed to see McCain leading Hill by 12 points. Still, the media hasn't really started to ramp up their support for her yet.

Drum used to be pretty reasonable, but lately he seems to have sunk into the fever swamps a bit.

I was one of the very few Republicans who applauded the gang of 14 when it happened. I said then that the Nuclear Option was still on the table and could swiftly be used if any of the Dems go back on their word. Glad to see that none of them have yet. Even reposted this on my site a couple of days ago. About the threatened filibuster, In the words of George W. Bush: Bring it on

Posted by: Randy Morrell at January 26, 2006 10:34 PM

If the Dems were going to have a McCarthy moment, I think it would have happened by now. The party apparatchiks are becoming enmeshed with the Kos Krazies in a way that makes me think the Dem party could end up splitting. Kerry's filibluster was just insurance. The Republicans have their crazies, but they're not pulling the marionette strings in the same way

Posted by: beautifulatrocities at January 27, 2006 10:27 AM

I agree, Jeff. With the criticism of Joe Lieberman, Chris Matthew, and Tim Russert for ideological impurity I honestly don't see much of a party being left. The party of Jefferson, Jackson, and FDR may go the way of the Whigs.

Two questions from a dumb Canadian... what's wrong with Alito? I have read a bit of background, and he seems okay... what am I missing besides the fact that Bush likes him and Ted Kennedy hates him?

Second question: Is Hillary Clinton going to run in the next Presidential race, could she win it, is America prepared for a female president?

Third Question: Who is the heir apparent to the republican party these days now that Bush is sliding into the plate for the finish? C. Rice?

Posted by: JoeCalgary at January 27, 2006 03:38 PM

Alright, that's more like 6 or 7 questions... I did say I was a dumb Canadian though, so it should be expected.

Posted by: JoeCalgary at January 27, 2006 03:40 PM

what am I missing besides the fact that Bush likes him and Ted Kennedy hates him?

Not much.

Is Hillary Clinton going to run in the next Presidential race,

Yes.

could she win it,

No, I'd say.

is America prepared for a female president?

As a concept, yes, I think. It would have to be a Republican, I also think.

Who is the heir apparent to the republican party these days now that Bush is sliding into the plate for the finish? C. Rice?

There is no heir apparent. I hope it turns out to be Rudy Giuliani, w/Rice as VP.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at January 27, 2006 03:45 PM

Giuliani/Rice would be a dream ticket, but I think the best we can hope for is Giuliani/McCain, with Rice continuing as SecState.

In fact, that could actually be better. Rice's genius might be wasted on mere politics.

Need your experience & opinion: Online political news survey ($10 reward possible)

Hello, all.
My name is Daekyung Kim, a Ph.D. student studying journalism and mass communication in Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I am emailing to ask you to do me a favor. I am now working on my dissertation whose topic is about online news and want to gather information about how and why Internet users are using news Web sites for political information based on an online survey.

This online survey will approximately take 15-20 minutes to complete. After collecting the data, I will draw to pick up 50 respondents among those who complete this survey and each will be given $ 10 gift card. Your experience will be very useful in understanding how politically interested online users are using online news and the consequent effects on traditional news.

Would you please spend some time to fill out this survey ?
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=594061481532
(please click on the address, OR if not working, copy it into the URL address)

You can withdraw the survey at any time you want. All responses will be kept confidential and only be used for academic purposes. This survey has been reviewed and approved by the SIUC Human Subject Committee. So, there are no questions that may identify personal information.

Thank you very much in advance for participating.

JoeCalgary:

The first female President of the United States will almost certainly be a Republican. America is certainly ready for it, but only if they feel reasonably confident that they're not going to be railroaded into a national health care system or some other such nonsense.
