It was Christmas Eve outside Ramadi when McMullen and members of the 243rd Engineer Company hit a roadside bomb. McMullen, a trained paramedic, pulled a wounded soldier from a burning vehicle, extinguished the flames and then protected the injured man with his own body when a second explosive device detonated. Rest in peace. Mark was widely picked up and got a Taranto "Best of the Web" link out of it, and as I eventually discovered, the reason I knew to hunt for the little gem was from reading you daily in the period including 11/1/04.
