Why is Ramon Saul Sanchez Starving?

Posted by Bill

Babalu Blog:

Ramon Saul Sanchez is still on hunger strike protesting the wet-foot/dry-foot policy. Governor Jeb Bush has contacted his brother in the White House and requested that the wet foot/dry foot issue be addressed with himself, members of the religious community and Congressmen Diaz-Balart and Ros Lehtinen, among others.

I've seen no word on this issue in the national media. A google news search yields no attention from CNN, Fox News, Reuters, Ap, ABC, CBS, NBC or any other national news network or media source.

As Val notes in a later post, the NY Sun has picked up on the story:

Pressure is mounting on President Bush to overhaul America's "wet-foot/dry-foot" policy on Cuban migration, as cries from lawmakers in Washington and Florida - and the desperation of a hunger striker in Miami - fuel an intensifying furor over the administration's deportation of 15 Cubans who risked their lives seeking freedom in America earlier this month.

Because of Florida's pivotal place in electoral politics and the Cuban-American community's solid Republican support within Florida, this issue can easily have an outsized impact on 2008. The GOP has to walk a very fine line between the demands of its perennially dissatisfied voting bloc of anti-illegal-immigration Republicans and its extremely valuable Cuban-American constituents in S Florida. Tough issue.

I think we should send all the Cubans back.

Armed.

With 10,000 Marines and air support.

TallDave,
only a warmongering imperialist president would do a thing like that. Or Saint John F. Kennedy.

Posted by: rbj at January 18, 2006 12:23 PM

No, Kennedy would send them back armed and then decide to deny them Marines and air support.

Umm, I'm not quite understanding how you Wingers reconcile your support for the MinuteMen on the Arizona and New Mexico borders with your frothing at the mouth about Cuban boat people being sent back.

The Chicanos have dry feet.

Oh, I forgot. They aren't a sure-to-vote Publican interest group.

What "wingers" are you referring to?

Posted by: Bill from INDC at January 18, 2006 11:58 PM

The Mexicans aren't victims of a Communist dictatorship that brutalizes dissidents. Where's your liberal compassion? Where's your outrage over their violated civil rights? How do you reconcile that with your outrage over Bush's relatively tiny restrictions on civil liberties?

Posted by: TallDave at January 19, 2006 08:06 AM

Gracias, TallDave.

Where's your liberal compassion? Where's your outrage over their violated civil rights?

Who needs those so-called "civil rights" when you've got Free Health Care™ and 100% Literacy™?

Capitalist running dog.

Cubans seeking political asylum and freedom represent a different group than Illegal immigrants seeking jobs and therefore require a different approach. First, Cubans leaving are not supported by their government whereas Mexicans are. Mexico's third largest import is money sent back from workers in the US.

It's my opinion that we do need to change our laws to allow more foreigners to legally enter the US to fill jobs. Such changes, if adopted, would do nothing to change the attempts by Cubans to get to the US.

Wet foot, dry foot is a very silly rule. We claim sovereignty over a larger and larger sea floor, extending the old 3 mile limit to 12 and now 200 in certain cases. Seems to me that if you can stand on that sea floor without drowning you are most likely on American sand, if not soil.

While I think comparisons are not valid, there is a similarity. In order to resolve the problem a comprehensive solution is required. No single US action or policty will work until a strategic iniative that has support from both governments is adopted.
