The Problem Isn't That Blogging Is Like High School; It's That Blogging Isn't Like High School

balance.jpg

This diagram represents the Circle of High School. It's a delicate balance that paradoxically leads to a many-layered foundation of incredible strength, the kind upon which societies can be built. Actions lead to predictable outcomes:

  • Jock gets too cocky, geek makes him or her look stupid in Calculus class; alternatively, punks intimidate him/her off campus
  • Preppy makes fun of someone's clothes, shitkicker looks up threateningly from sharpening his knife in homeroom and scares the shit out of him
  • Geek thinks he or she is soooo smart, punk/shitkicker knock books out of his/her hand in front of crowd of kids; or, jock makes him/her puke with carefully aimed dodgeball throw
  • Punk pushes flouting of social conventions too far, jock/preppy/shitkicker pisses in his/her locker
  • Shitkicker goes too redneck, preppy girls laugh at him/her and make him/her feel like an asshole

This diagram, on the other hand, illustrates the dynamics of blogging:

balance gone.jpg

Geek tendencies are extending further and in directions never intended or even contemplated by nature, facing only heavy-handed and sour opposition from a surly band of preppies. And people say whatever they want with no risk of getting stuffed headfirst into a trashcan.

I rest my case. Global warming next.

And people say whatever they want with no risk of getting stuffed headfirst into a trashcan.

See also: "impossibly high threshold for rhetorical embarrassment," also know as the "Third Law of Oliver Willis."

Much like the Matrix, one can try and stuff a subject in the trashcan, but he just passes through it like it's not even there and moves on.

One of my favorite examples.

For whatever reason, the movie "Heathers" comes to mind. Why "Heathers" and not "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"? Hmmm. Dunno.

Posted by: Roxanne at December 22, 2005 02:52 PM

I can think of a couple of reasons.

Posted by: Hubris at December 22, 2005 02:55 PM

Shhh. Ever since I moved into programming I have been exacting my revenge on the Jocks and Preppies of the world.

Posted by: Gordon at December 22, 2005 02:56 PM

re #1: Do not try and fight the trashcan. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.

What truth?

There is no Trashcan.

There is no trashcan?

Then you'll see, Atrios, that the trashcan does not contain you, it is only yourself.

(sorry)

roflmao! that is... it's like you're insightful or something.

alternately, we have geeks playing all the rolls... "excuse me... you've got that all wrong, that's not shitkicking... NO ! NO! you cannot use Halo for jock cred... jesus this is all screwed up."

I think I was the kid standing in the middle of the circle selling dope to all the types.

Posted by: harrison at December 22, 2005 05:21 PM

Dude... your highschool diagram is a pentagram.

I always KNEW highschool was evil. Now I know WHY.

Posted by: Rick at December 23, 2005 11:01 AM

So... you're saying that in the blogosphere I have no chance of encountering Hot Preppie Chicks with a wandering monster roll? Not even with a natural 00?

Posted by: Flea at December 23, 2005 09:39 PM

Heathers over Fast Times, fer sure, but what about Breakfast Club? That diagram up there might as well have the disembodies heads of Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, et al With "only geeks" on the 'sphere will we be able to affect the sort of social liquidiation promised by BC, or are we just trying to marginalize all of the other cliques? Or - and this is perhaps most likely - are we just becoming hopelessly more geeky and self-marginalized, blogging from the comfort-zone and never leaving the desk to spark one with Bender and flirt with Claire?

Hey Flea,

If they're hobgoblins disguised as Hot Preppy Chicks, then...yeah, your chances are pretty good.

I've managed to save up roughly $28836 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?
