*** Babalu Blog sticks it to Code Pink. Boo-ya.

*** The GOP's new ad campaign: I love it.

*** They love us, they really love us! Or not quite love, but lovely nonetheless, despite ABC's caveated negative spin:

Eighty-three percent of Afghans express a favorable opinion of the United States overall, similar to the 87 percent who call the U.S.-led overthrow of the Taliban a good thing. That compares to favorable ratings of a mere 8 percent for the Taliban, and 5 percent for bin Laden. People who are unhappy with their local living conditions are twice as likely to have an unfavorable opinion of the United States.

Support for the United States is less than full-throated. Far fewer, 24 percent, regard it "very" favorably. And while 68 percent rate the work of the United States in Afghanistan positively, that's well below the ratings given to Karzai, the United Nations or the present Afghan government (83 percent, 82 percent and 80 percent positive, respectively).

Still, an 83 percent favorable rating for the United States, and a 68 percent positive work performance rating, are remarkable — in sharp contrast to negative views of the United States in many other Muslim nations. (Another contrast is Karzai's job rating — 83 percent positive — compared with President Bush's in the United States, where 39 percent of Americans approved in the last ABC News/Washington Post poll.)

*** As anyone with a heritable genetic illness or that's studied the wild inefficiencies of metabolism can tell you, "incompetent design, indeed:"

The thing that perhaps is closest to all of us is our own skeleton, and there are certainly all kinds of stupidity in our design. No self-respecting engineering student would make the kinds of dumb mistakes that are built into us.

All of our pelvises slope forward for convenient knuckle-dragging, like all the other great apes. And the only reason you stand erect is because of this incredible sharp bend at the base of your spine, which is either evolution's way of modifying something or else it's just a design that would flunk a first-year engineering student.

Is it me, or did he just call God out?

*Ahem*

I'm sorry, the "intelligent designer."

Comments

If there's a Magic Man in the Sky responsible for designing and creating everything, I look around and conclude that if he's intelligent, then he's an asshole.

Posted by: Dave at December 9, 2005 11:30 AM

Some might take rather strong offense to that assessment, I suspect.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at December 9, 2005 11:44 AM

See, what you fail to seem to notice is this: if you are wrong about God, all your smart ass comments about him are digging you into a deep grave. So, I guess in the end...no matter what we think-the truth will be shown.

Posted by: Narnia Nerd at December 9, 2005 11:56 AM

Until "The Designer" can give me a good explanation why "He" gave my brother, father of 2 toddlers, a fatal illness that killed him the day before his wife was diagnosed with another potentially life-threatening illness, I say who cares?

Posted by: Dave at December 9, 2005 12:01 PM

Assuming that you are addressing me -

See, what you fail to seem to notice is this: if you are wrong about God, all your smart ass comments about him are digging you into a deep grave.

Did I make smart-assed comments about God? Like, were they mean? Or did I make a smart-assed comment intended to poke at the proponents of Intelligent Design, who assert the "designer" isn't necessarily God at all? The layers are excrutiating.

And I'm lightly kidding. I'd certainly hope that your God isn't so thin-skinned and humorless? Sort of dims the prospects for heaven as a fun place, I'd think.

BTW, your theory is called Pascal's Wager.

http://www.iep.utm.edu/p/pasc-wag.htm

A skeptic's refutation is here.

http://www.geocities.com/paulntobin/pascal.html

And a succinct counter-philosophy is called the "Atheist's Wager:"

It is better to live your life as if there are no gods, and try to make the world a better place for your being in it. If there is no god, you have lost nothing and will be remembered fondly by those you left behind. If there is a benevolent god, he will judge you on your merits and not just on whether or not you believed in him.

I saw that Afghan poll yesterday and immediately wondered when such a poll will be taken in Iraq. It will have the same results.

Dave,

I thank God everyday for the marvelous and wonderful complexity of our universe, that allows us to exist and to build all the technological wonders we enjoy, and allows for free will. Unfortunately, that complexity also tends to break down so that people get sick and die, and people often use that free will to do bad things.

I hadn't seen the Atheist's Wager before. Interesting. It doesn't really strike me as a rebuttal of Pascal's Wager though, so much as a parallel statement in the language of secular humanism, which itself is derivative of Christian values.

Pascal's Wager is built on the premise one should act according to God's will. But some cultures like the Aztecs believed God's will involved torture, oppression, human sacrifice, and cannibalism. So I think a better refutation is just to note that you could very easily be wrong about what God's will actually is. (From there, I personally follow empiricism to the conclusion that Christianity is probably most accurate, based on the results it's gotten compared to other religions.)

That curve in your spine and that contorted pelvis is there so folks would look at it and doubt He exists. Yours isn't the first faith He's tested, you know.

Why do I think the reason Bill posted this is so we'll all start walking on our knuckles and barking like baboons, just like him? Then he can finally leave the house without his organ grinder!

Posted by: spongeworthy at December 9, 2005 12:41 PM

Oh, I should clarify, I don't believe the human form is divinely designed, but that it just evolved according to the laws of the universe, which, presuming God exists, He had some hand in designing.

Personally, I have no problem with Code Pink going to Cuba. It's a loathesome group and I might feel sorry for the Cubans who have to cater to and serve the middle-aged rich white leftoid hippy-dippy hags. But don't we want them posing for pictures with dictators? What better way to clarify their nature than to have solid evidence that they support totalitarianism? I'd think most conservatives would be happy to see this trip come off and see it get plenty of press. It's liberals with common sense (an increasingly rare type), who should dread the appearance in the news of leading anti-war groups vacationing down in Cuba shilling for the worlds longest reigning tyrant. If they bring Sheehan, then that's even better! Watch her squander the last remaining scraps of her viability as a mainstream anti-war figure.

I guess Babalu Blog didn't get the memo from Karl Rove. An opportunity thwarted. Oh well. We still have screaming Howie.

I'm certainly no expert (I'm a musician, not an physiologist), but I seem to recall that the curvature of the human spine provides for some very specific function. Besides, if the "sloping" pelvis and curved spine are so dumb, how in the hell did they make it past the process of natural selection? Surely nature would have "selected" a better approach.

Posted by: John S. at December 11, 2005 12:53 AM

Nature selects "functional," not necessarily "well-designed." Sentient design at least as well considered as human intelligent design would create much more efficient biological systems, given the power.
