The Overlooked Howard Dean Quote
Posted by Dorkafork Much has been made of the recent Dean statement that the "idea that we're going to win the war in Iraq is an idea which is just plain wrong," but there is a more important quote from that interview that has been overlooked: Dean says the Democrat position on the war is 'coalescing,' and is likely to include several proposals. The current number of American troops in Iraq is 155,000 (up from the normal level of 138,000 due to the upcoming Iraqi election.) Bringing 80,000 home, immediately, would reduce troop strength in Iraq by more than half. Also, Dean apparently doesn't know that the Guard and Reserves contain many of the specialties needed in Iraq: Civil Affairs soldiers are the field commander's link to the civil authorities in his area of operation. With specialists in every area of the government, they can assist a host government meet its people's needs and maintain a stable and viable civil administration. The Democratic National Committee Chairman believes these forces "don't belong" in this sort of conflict. Posted by: leelu at December 7, 2005 07:39 PM 2006 is going to be 2002 redux: the Dems buck every trend & somehow manage to lose seats Posted by: beautifulatrocities at December 7, 2005 09:20 PM Excellent post. Posted by: SeanH at December 7, 2005 09:33 PM beautifulatrocities, I agree. And to expand on your point, today the D's are collectively doing what Kerry in 2004 did as an individual: flip-flopping on the war. Dean is most wrong when he says that his party is "coalescing"--they're doing nothing of the sort. Murtha is still saying withdraw now (all the way to Okinawa), Pelosi is praising him for his brave stance, Kerry doesn't want a timetable--only an "estimated timetable" [Huh?], Biden says "we should bring all our forces home as soon as possible", and Lieberman says "Our Troops Must Stay". They're all over the map--just like Kerry was. Posted by: azlibertarian at December 7, 2005 10:36 PM I personally can't figure out why we are fighting for the rights of Iraqi people to begin with -- remind me please. I wouldn't exchange the life of one American soldier for any other soul on this planet. Democracy in the M.E. -- who gives a crap? Please explain to me why we should care. I'm not being facetious -- I really cannot remember why I should care about Iraq. Posted by: Vaughn D. Taylor at December 8, 2005 12:38 AM Why should you care about Iraq? Why are we fighting for the rights of Iraqi people? It is because of the universality of human rights. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." "All men" as in "all humans". Not "all persons currently residing in America." These are not granted by any government, they are inalienable human rights. And if those words mean anything, it means we should care that others are not denied their natural human rights. As Martin Luther King, Jr. put it, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." You to say that you wouldn't exchange the life of one American soldier for any other soul on the planet. A lot of American soldiers would disagree with that sentiment. Not that they want to die, but they're willing to risk their life for others. Posted by: dorkafork at December 8, 2005 01:09 AM Vaughn: To get rid of the alligators for good, you drain the swamp. The whole ME is a swamp where Islamofascism breeds. The dictators of the region have long used the West, Israel and America as a scapegoat for all the problems of their nations ... in the hope their populations won't notice just how pathetic and impoverishing their dictators are. An Iraq in which its people have a stake in peace, stability and prosperity - one in which they have more to lose, in other words - will be far less likely to support (and tolerate) those who threaten that peace. Such an Iraq is less of a threat to its neighbors, to Israel, to the United States and to the world. Posted by: BD at December 8, 2005 07:21 AM VD Taylor: We're no more fighting for the Iraqi people as we fought for the Korean people in the Korean War, or fought for the German and Japanese people in World War II. We are fighting to make Americans more secure. Freeing the Iraqi people, like the Korean, Japanese, and German people are means to an end, but not the end (or at least not the main, strategic end) in and of itself. Posted by: Lurking Observer at December 8, 2005 04:58 PM Hmmmm, The National Guard is a part of the US Military, we can bring things to the fight that the Active forces can't. Guard and Reserve soldiers, not only have Military specialties, they also have jobs at home. These jobs are a cross section of the US. I remember, right after the the fall of Baghdad, when the CPA was standing up, they were desparate for specialists in a lot of civil functions. The Railroad comes to mind. They needed a railroad type guy, they found him. Seems some "Guard" unit had a guy, a Sergeant, at home that, happened to be the head of the NYC railyard, or something like that. Next thing you know he is the Iraqi Railroad "Advisor". What "Deanhole" wants to stop, by removing the Guard and Reserve, is the "Home Town Support" Guard and Reserve units bring with them. Just Look around. Our hometown paper sent reporters to stay with us, reporting on what/how we were doing. It happens all across the country. Those small town news reports on the troops, are mostly good news stories. They need those to stop. CSM Bird PS: One more time "Mr. Dean, Fuck You" Posted by: CSM BigBird at December 8, 2005 07:47 PM Gotta go with BD and Lurking Observer on this one. As proud I am that we're bringing Democracy to these people, the reason I support the war is because every Democracy we create means one less place where our enemies can get a solid footing.
