Entitlement Culture Check

Posted by Bill

Belated chuckle-worthy choice of words in the WaPo:

Although the local housing market appears now to be cooling, the median price for a house in much of the region remains well above $400,000. People such as Halford say they are priced out of something that by rights should be theirs. In her case, that means a two-bedroom condominium with two bathrooms, a washer and dryer and secure parking.

"I don't think that's asking a lot," she said. She'll settle for less: one bathroom and a hookup for the washer and dryer.

Surely forthcoming addendums to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

I want a walk-in closet and a balcony with a lake view, too.

Posted by: JohnAnnArbor at December 7, 2005 06:02 PM

This is just so typical of you hypocritical, right wing constitutionalists.

You’re always arguing that our rights as citizens weren’t meant to be limited to those spelled out specifically in the Bill of Rights or the Constitution itself.

So who’s to say we don’t have a natural right to secure parking?

Posted by: jmaster at December 7, 2005 08:14 PM

The woman's point about "rights" is ridiculous, but then again, so is $400,000 for a 900-square-foot condo that was a shitty Eisenhower-era apartment a year ago but just happens to be located in Clarendon or something similarly "trendy." People who buy such places are jackasses. I'll keep renting my 1300-square-foot apartment in Fairfax for less than half of that mortgage payment, thank you, and invest a good chunk of the difference.

And I'll be able to buy groceries, too.

If I were going to demand a right to a decent home, I wouldn't start with a half million dollar 2 bedroom condo! I'll take a lake house with at least 4br/3ba. And a boat!

Surely forthcoming addendums to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

You laugh now, but...

The positive rights bandwagon gets bigger every day. It's the age-old warning about voters discovering they can award themselves the treasury. I doubt Alexis de Tocqueville ever really even suspected the heights to which self-indulgent, self-righteous avarice would someday extend.

The value of real estate is relative. "Trendy" areas that people like to live because they are, well, "trendy," tend to maintain their values in downturns, based on location relative to amenities and commerce, which maintains demand.

"Trendy" areas that are considered "trendy" because they are up-and-coming tend to take a big hit in downturns, but also can reap great reward.

I haven't met anyone that makes a decision on real estate for any reasons other than convenience, affordability or investment. So "trendy" for the sake of being trendy seems like a rare bird. Unless you have enough money not to have to care.

I'd prefer a lake house with a boat to my condo too, but unfortunately, my job in Washington, DC won't let me telecommute from rural Colorado or Idaho yet.

The bastards.

Bill,

Just substitute the word "bay" for "lake".

And at least $1,000,000 for $400,000 ...

Rights. a definition
Do I have a "right" to food? If so, I'll tell the farmer to grow some corn for me. I'll be hungry this winter.
Do I have a "right" to housing? If so, I'll tell the builder to build me a house this winter. It will be cold.
Do I have a "right" to health care? IF so, tell those young people to get theimselves trained. I might be ill some day.
"Rights" can only involve things that are free. I have no right to impinge upon others to care for my needs.

JoAnn,

Ahhh, but the rich can pay for all those things. And, the argument goes, the gov't has an obligation to seize their excess wealth and provide those things for you.

Posted by: TallDave at December 8, 2005 12:10 PM

What is "excess wealth"?

Posted by: Cowboy is a compliment at December 8, 2005 02:00 PM

Cowboy,

'Excess wealth' is exactly the amount a person has that affords them the things you covet. If you don't covet what they have, no excess wealth.

JoAnn,

Well said. But I don't think most Americans have any understanding of what you mean...
