Speaking Of Harry Shearer...

Posted by Hubris

I disagree with his reasoning here (for one thing, he's trying to make a comparison where there are too many variables other than his intended point of contrast), but I'm impressed that he actually responds to some comments, including mine.

If I were him, I'd use my residuals from The Simpsons to pay a hooker to dress as a cowgirl and read the comments on my posts, say "they're so wrong" and lightly spank me intermittently. But that's just me.

The same thing happens with insurance: You can't raise homeowners insurance rates in New Jersey to cover the risk of those of us living in Florida.

They sure as heck did after after a bad season a few years back. My rates (Allstate) took a big hike. I lived in PA at the time. When I pinned the agent down on it he admitted my rates went up because profits were down due to all the storms that year. Not even "losses up", but "profits down". They paid so many claims in FL that profits were down and they straight out raised my homeowners rates in PA to offset it.

Posted by: OCSteve at November 28, 2005 11:39 AM

OCSteve,

I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if that were the entire explanation. PA rates are controlled by PA regulators based on PA-specific insurer financials.

Here's an example [warning: PDF] of a PA homeowners rate filing.

I don't claim to be an expert, I'm open to correction on this.

Posted by: Hubris at November 28, 2005 12:26 PM

I didn't say it was above board or even legal :) More like the agent (who I had used for years) was letting me know there was no valid reason for my rates to be going up so much, that they got spanked in FL that year and it was being passed on.

Posted by: OCSteve at November 28, 2005 12:38 PM

You see, if I'd been distracted by a hooker cowgirl, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to misinterpret your comment.

I don't have time or inclination to register, so I can't post this over there, but comparing a broadcast company to an utility provider is a little ridiculous in the first place. The on-air "talent" is the broadcasters primary resource, they can relocate to a rental studio and resume business quite easily. An electric companies resources are the distribution network, which was destroyed, the maintenance facilities: destroyed, the maintenance vehicles and equipment: destroyed. It is two completely different situations he is comparing.

Posted by: B Moe at November 28, 2005 02:04 PM

Also, it seems to me that to name the "evil" company, but keep the "good" company secret - makes me wonder why? After all, wouldn't "company B" like the good publicity. Most likely, it is because he knows that if he names the company, someone will do a quick review/investigation and disprove all of his silly assertions.

Posted by: Vanilla Thunder at November 28, 2005 02:17 PM

I am an employee of Entergy and I DID take the time to register and LAMBASTE that ridiculous nonsense.

Between the 2 hurricanes, Entergy lost 1.8 million customers, all of which were restored (if possible) within 46 days.

B Moe - you missed one - customer base: destroyed.

Shearer also missed the fact that the Entergy Corporate HQ that supports a full 14,500+ employees, including IT and payroll, also relocated from New Orleans following Katrina. I wonder how big the relocation of Company B was.

Jackass.
