What Am I Thankful For?
Posted by Bill I'm thankful that John Cole finally came to his senses about a certain virulent little seditionist. It's not like I didn't tell him ... I'm also thankful for Klondike Artificially Flavored Ice Cream Cones with Chocolate Flavored Coating and Roasted Peanuts Artificial Flavor Added. And Belvedere vodka. Happy Thanksgiving! His comments section however is a swamp. Now he seems to have declared war on his commenters. Personally I'd be banning IPs en masse, but hey, his blog. I am thankful for... OTOH, John did offer this frank assessment of Kos back in the July thread: If you want to see the crackpot talking points before they hit the mainstream, there is no better place than the diaries at Kos to visit. Given the current WP controversy, it's hard to disagree. And if I were in John's shoes, I'd be hesitant to throw out the people who are probably responsible for a lot of the traffic, and it's probably beneficial for the commenters to be exposed to John's viewpoint, a drop of sanity in their sea of self-reinforcing lunacy. John's commenters are an unruly lot, prone to quickly abandon logic and resort to ad hominems, but, as someone who's "debated" (if that's not debasing the word) them quite a bit, what fascinates me more than that is their peculiar blindness to incovenient facts. Some seem to "feel" a certain way, and anything that might invalidate that feeling is deleted from their perception of the world. This characteristic is not one they even bother to hide from fromselves; indeed they glory in their self-righteous immunity from reality. I've been told by more than one BJ commenter that it doesn't matter how many facts are on my side, they "know" I must be wrong. Posted by: TallDave at November 25, 2005 03:21 PM Agreed.
