But Soft, What Stupidity Through Yonder Computer Screen Breaks? It Is Eschaton, And A Bunch Of Morons

Posted by Hubris

My favorite blogger shares his unique brand of insightful commentary while linking to a post about bodies remaining in New Orleans.

The Eschabots pounce:

Impeach!

-----------

Any troll want to argue that Shrub gives a rat's flying ass about black people?

-----------

Amazing. FEMA continues to fuck up, months later. Isn't it time for Chertoff to resign? Isn't he ultimately responsible, as head of Homeland Security, FEMA's boss?

-----------

None of the poor black folks in New Orleans were useful to the GOP. They didn't vote for them, they didn't contribute to their campaigns, and they don't own oil companies or need an estate tax cut. They aren't even cute enough to use in photo ops shilling for Christian extremism. As Karl Rove would say, "fuck 'em."

Eh, it's kind of unfair to pick on a site for its commenters, but Atrios himself jumps into the comment thread:

The right spends so much time indulging in fake outrage they can't even imagine that anyone ever feels real outrage.

Well, who can blame them for being stirred up? The subject post includes the following call to arms:

It is time to DEMAND of your representatives that the government fulfill the most basic of duties and search the lower 9th Ward before December.

Perhaps everyone should have paid more attention to the CNN transcript that started the whole thing:

COOPER: You warned us October 3. When the state stopped house- to-house searching for -- for -- for the deceased, you said, it was a bad idea, that there were more people out there. Now the death toll, it turns out, has jumped by 104. And -- and families are returning to find the bodies of their loved ones still in their homes. How does -- it's got to infuriate you.

The State? A comedy group? Ohhhhh, wait a second, he's talking about a state. I'm taking a wild guess, but maybe it's this one.

Hey, I got lucky! I looked back at the news in October, and it turns out my guess was right:

All agencies conducting the searches have finished their sweeps for remains. But Kenyon International Emergency Services, the private company hired by the state to remove the bodies, is on call if any other body is found, said Bob Johannessen, a spokesman with the state Department of Health and Hospitals.

"There might still be bodies found for instance, if a house was locked and nobody able to go into it," Johannessen said.

Last week, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it had completed its role in the search, because its specialties were no longer needed. Those services include getting to bodies in attics or other hard-to-reach places or in buildings that may be structurally unsound.

It seems that it was actually Louisiana that finally called off the search in its entirety. I don't know enough details to give an opinion on whether or not state officials made a mistake, but it doesn't seem relevant to Bush's potential impeachment either way.

So yeah, call your representatives, but don't expect it to have much of an effect--unless you happen to live in Louisiana.

For the record, I don't doubt that the outrage Atrios shows is genuine. It's unfortunate that it is so misguided.

I always loved the description that Jon Henke used in his taxonomy of liberal blogs

Atrios: "Reaches new altitudes of Outrage on a daily basis."

of course, the best description by far was about Dailykos:
"Sort of an uber-Liberal Valhalla, where liberals go to work themselves into a berserker rage before venturing forth to do battle with the Righties."

Ah, me...it's hard to talk about outrage when it's a daily occurance--that's when it's more accurately described as the ravings of an unhinged individual.

I am FURIOUS at FEMA and Bush for not doing more to prevent the tsunami! And why did it take so long for FEMA to respond after they failed to prevent it?!

Don't give me those "whole other country" and "force of nature" excuses! TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY!!

Well I guess you be a better man than me. I don't for a minute believe that this is any more than the usual 'progressive' faux angst . If it were not yet another opportunity for Bush bashing, these worthless creatures would not likely even think to comment on this story.

They seem to exist almost solely as the anti-Bush,and have little existence outside of their relationship to him. Pathetic things.

Actually:

"For the record, I don't doubt that the outrage Atrios shows is genuine."--Hubris

Though again, Bill agrees - Atrios's outrage is analagous to the repetitive sincerity of a homeless man that delivers daily diatribes about how insidious government microwaves are forcing him to poop his pants.

Did anyone notice the unintended hypocrisy and latent racism in the assertion that "[n]one of the poor black folks in New Orleans were useful to the GOP...They aren't even cute enough to use in photo ops shilling for Christian extremism"?

Seems like this person is using white, racist notions of what constitutes cute.

Disgusting.

Again.

The scout prime site they link to has a response for Hubris, including this little gem:

"So Hubris and others of this ilk may want to push this solely upon the state (read Dem Gov) but
it's quite a simplistic and disingenuous argument.
FEMA screwed up and it is entirely fair for anyone in America to call their rep and say so."

Apparently it is not simplistic and disingenuous to put it solely on the Federal (read Rep Pres)
LMFAO

It is also "not about time and resources", apparently there is a worm hole or some kinda warp Katrina left down there, they don't elaborate.

The best part of the Scout Prime rebuttal:

But since cities and localities had historically recovered bodies from mass casualties, FEMA says, it had made no arrangements.
Basically, the state didn't do their job, and we're supposed to blame FEMA for not planning to do the state's job for them before they knew that the state wasn't prepared to do the job. Eh, or something like that, anyway it's Bush's fault and there are dead bodies and SOME OF THEM ARE CHILDREN AND SOME OF THOSE ARE BROWN CHILDREN AND WE ALL KNOW HOW MUCH BUSH HATES BROWN PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY YOUNG HELPLESS ONES.

I was going to add an update, but Matt already addressed the point I was about to make. Scout Prime forgot to add some emphasis to a rather important point that makes clear how, well, his rebuttal doesn't really rebut anything.

Thank you Hubris for giving me the link to the defunct-comedy troupe The State.
I REALLY miss those guys and I signed the petition, and am praying to God/Krishna/Buddha/Cthulu that it will be released on DVD.

Here's a comment I left on this site the last time a state-related topic came up:

I was really exited about the new comedy central show Stella which is premiering this month. Much like Reno 911, it's by several ex-members of MTV's The State, which I regard as the best sketch comedy group since Monty Python. However, my enthusiasm declined to about zero today after noticing that on The State's official website they decided to link to windowtreatmentnyc.com, an anti-bush site set up for the RNC last year that spreads the message "This is New York City, RNC, take your party elsewhere". Another example of Democratic tolerance in action.

Since this has been on their official website since last year, I assume it speaks for every member of The State. That is:

Kevin Allison
Michael Ian Black (Stella)
Ben Garant (Reno 911)
Michael Patrick Jann (co-director Reno 911)
Kerri Kenney (Reno 911)
Thomas Lennon (Reno 911)
Joe Lo Truglio
Ken Marino
Michael Showalter (Stella)
David Wain (Stella)

Perhaps I should be used to it by now, but the "entertainment industry" never ceases to amaze me with new examples of their self-righteous hatred, intolerance, and myopia. How can people who make their living by pleasing viewers, never even consider that it might be unwise to tell approximately half of their U.S. customer base that they hate their politics and by extension their opinions and agenda.

Now, I don't particularly care about celebrities' politics, just so long as they keep it out of their work. I have not noticed any acute political statements in The State (of what I can remember, it aired a decade ago) or Reno 911, so that's fine, but keep divisive political statements off your official website. If you need to publicly express your opinion that Republicans are not welcome here, then my money is not welcome anywhere around your bank account.

The website that the state linked to has disappeared, but you can see what it contained here (unfortunately the anti-W graphic it contained (a crossed-out W) were not archived).

First you wig the freak out, then you "don't particularly care." You really just have to ignore artists' crazy politics unless they do something really offensive, like deny the Holocaust or claim Sammy Hagar's Van Halen was better than David Lee Roth's.
