Some Thoughts On The Deignan Affair
Posted by Hubris
If you haven’t been following the saga, here's a nice recap. I'm too lazy to post a bunch of links, but it's easy to find relevant posts at Technorati. Now, someone has e-mailed Deignan’s wife. Because they're just trying to help, you know. Regardless of what one thinks of Deignan’s personality, his photo, or his site, it does not provide a justification for saying that Deignan “deserved” Wallace Hettle contacting his advisor regarding rather innocuous comments (PDF) Deignan made on a blog. For those who find fault with Deignan’s vigorous reaction to this episode, I would suggest a mental exercise wherein you imagine your employer being contacted regarding comments you made on a blog, or a political conversation you had at, say, a bar. On top of that, imagine that you felt that your comments and actions were misrepresented. It is possible to completely disagree with Deignan’s plan to “out” and attempt to sue Bitch Ph.D., without changing one’s opinion on the Hettle aspect of the incident. "Compartmentalizing" is not always a bad thing when you're assessing rights and wrongs. There is some irony in people writing multiple posts on the subject, or posting numerous heated comments at Deignan’s site, while simultaneously criticizing Deignan for being “obsessed” or overly emotionally invested with this thing that actually involves him. There are also a lot of people who are complaining about Deignan’s alleged lack of maturity, all the while tossing every insult in the book Deignan’s way. Check out the comment threads at his site for evidence of this. That they apparently think this will help change Deignan's course of action is mystifying to me. Speaking of insults, a note for retards: Deignan is not threatening to sue anyone because of being banned from the Bitch Ph.D. site. That ain't what it was all about. If you're going to go on a rant about the guy, at least get the story straight. I say we pants him and make him sit in a pricker bush. Posted by: Glenn Bowen at November 13, 2005 05:50 PM You confuse cause with justification. Paul is threatening to sue BitchPhD because he was banned. His justification is that she libeled him by claiming that he spoofed IMs. The justification is so weak that it led many to conclude that the real motivating factor was the banning of him. Posted by: Lemma at November 13, 2005 07:47 PM You confuse cause with justification. No I don't. I'm going by what the guy has actually said, you're going by your magical ability to crawl into the dude's head. Posted by: Hubris at November 13, 2005 07:55 PM you're going by your magical ability to crawl into the dude's head. I wish I were a progressive, so I could have that magical ability. Then I'd see that what the world is really crying out for--whether it says so "out loud" or not--is special treatment for entitlement groups, coupled with a "no mercy" approach for all who don't meet criteria. Like, you know, Mr. Deignan. Posted by: ilyka at November 13, 2005 08:59 PM One time I thought I had a progressive crawling around in my head. Turned out to be ear mites. Posted by: B Moe at November 13, 2005 10:22 PM This is a very clever piece of commentary except for one little thing. I refuse to play the victim.
