Write an article about an OIL COMPANY earning BILLIONS in its BIGGEST-EVER PROFIT, and the execs at Exxon might as well be lighting homeless people afire with BILLION-dollar bills.

Oil refining is NOT an industry that generates large ROI. Refineries are getting fantastic returns at 2-3%. The initial capital costs, plus maintenance and operating costs, are just too high to generate better returns. Those profit figures can't be analyzed in a vacuum - and they represent more the increased DEMAND for oil. The larger the market, the larger the revenues. Pure profit numbers don't tell anything near the whole story.

Here's more interesting info for you. In 2Q 2005, Exxon took in $88.6B, and made $7.64B in after-tax profit, which means they made 8.62 cents on the dollar, last quarter. Now, in 3Q 2005, they took in $100.7B, and made $9.92B in after-tax profit, which means they made 9.85 cents on the dollar.

So, let's say we cry FOUL! and confiscate the $1.24B in "excess" profit (on a percentage basis) that Exxon earned, and distribute it equally to U.S. households.

Acording to the census, there were 112 million households in the U.S. in 2004. Let's just say there are 124 million now, just to give us...

...a nice round number of TEN DOLLARS PER HOUSEHOLD.

So there you go, folks, that's how much money that EVIL GREEDY EXXON squeezed from us this quarter in excess profit. TEN DOLLARS.

The reason BIG OIL is making a greater profit margin than "little oil" is because they have many more and highly skilled commodities traders that buy and sell everyday and hedge (lock in) their prices months in advance. They do this so that if something happens (like Katrina) they are locked in at a better total cost.

Dam BIG OIL for being well run companies with intelligent employees!

Yes, but one has to start someplace in exposing profits for the pernicious evil they are!

Gas and Oil are 2 different commodities that do not necessarily follow the same price trend. Yes one is the raw material for the other but America’s energy problems are not being caused by oil they are caused by a lack of gasoline refining. We could, and we will, see oil fall below $50 per barrel by year end but we will NOT see gas prices come down at the same rate. The principles of supply and demand do not allow gas prices to come down if the supply is still as scarce as it is.

I bought shares of Exxon in May for $56.35. After five months of high gas prices, its shot up to $56.45.

I remember hearing alot of talk about refinning capacity during the hurricane coverage...it ought to be to encourage the oil companies to increase refinning capacity.

Oil companies HAVE tried to increase US refining capability. The environmental lobby tied them up in court with lawsuit after frivolous lawsuit for literally 10 years, before the oil company finally gave up and didn't build the facility. I beleive that was in 1980, and happened right here in Virginia, south of Hampton Roads.
The bottom line is, if you want the oil companies to increase domestic refining capacity, make it easier for them to build the damn things in the first place. The technology has advanced so much in the past thirty years (the last brand new refinery successfully completed was in southwest Louisiana, finished in 1976) because they have had to squeeze more refinering capacity out of fewer and fewer refineries, since old ones shut down and no new ones have been built.
I think we should force every tree-hugger who even complains about new refineries to WALK everywhere they go, for the rest of their miserable lives...no buses, no trains, oh, and since they hate modern technology so much, no electricity either, since the chances are that it may have been produced by a Oil-Burning generator!
