Seizing Opportunity In Wake Of Intelligent Design Decision, Kansas Nerds Seek To Redefine "Gym"
Posted by Hubris
DWEEB ADVOCATE CHESTER WILKERSON: "It's time to move past outdated physical fitness dogma. Can I do a chin-up? No. But I can do spelling-ups all day long." (continued on page A12) Posted by Hubris at November 9, 2005 12:54 PM | TrackBack (5) Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsHey, call me a nerd, but in high school--30 years ago--I lettered in both Physics and Chemistry. [I also got some stupid JV letter in tennis...like that matters to anything in the world.] Could maybe have done one or two chin-ups then, and certainly can't do any today. Posted by: azlibertarian at November 9, 2005 01:29 PM Nerd! Books aren't cool. Posted by: Hubris at November 9, 2005 01:42 PM What's all this about Intelligent Design? As far as I have seen from all the senseless screwups in the world, it should be correctly termed "Malevolent Design." By all means, teach that in schools. Then kids would actually gain some understanding of how the world works, and wouldn't be so surprised when Life deals them seven-deuce offsuit. Posted by: Jeffrey Hull at November 9, 2005 02:21 PM azlibertarian --- Oh yeah? Fifteen years ago I lettered in Quiz Bowl. As Captain. Out-geek that. Posted by: Ian Hamet at November 9, 2005 03:10 PM Did you hear today's news from Kansas? A group of archeologists from KU just unearthed massive fossilized remains of a Giant Flying Spagetti Monster. Posted by: willem at November 9, 2005 06:02 PM I haven't had a chance to get in the liquor yet, so I'm going to be serious for a moment. Does it bother any of you how so many people apparently have no clue of the scientific method itself? If our schools are failing so badly that only a small fraction of the population understand the foundation of scientific inquiry itself, does it really matter what the curriculum is? Aren't we really just debating the details of what are kids aren't going to learn? Well that got me in a drinkin' mood! Cheers! Posted by: B Moe at November 9, 2005 06:03 PM Oh Yeah? Well, I'm the chess coach and the sponsor for the Academic Decathlon....my nerd credentials have been in place for YEARS, man! I'm so lonely. Posted by: ArizonaTeach at November 10, 2005 11:33 AM Ian Hamet: I can, by lettering three times. And winning a 1995 Kansas Class 3A regional championship. Not that I'm bragging, mind you. Posted by: j.d. at November 10, 2005 01:51 PM I was on the local NBC affliate's televised quiz show, the "A-Team Challenge," three years in a row. Who's the King Nerd now, bitches? Posted by: Bill from INDC at November 10, 2005 02:17 PM I was captain of our Academic Bowl Team freshman through senior years. And I kissed a girl. Once. Posted by: Hubris at November 10, 2005 02:25 PM I was captain of our Academic Bowl Team freshman through senior years. But were you on TV? Posted by: Bill from INDC at November 10, 2005 02:47 PM Yep, CBS for the "Hi-Q" competition (where in an act of rebellion, I indicated that I aspired to be a hobo when I grew up during the mid-show "host chats up the dorks" segment), NBC for the Senior Honor Bowl. The toughest thing to deal with? The groupies. Posted by: Hubris at November 10, 2005 02:54 PM where in an act of rebellion, I indicated that I aspired to be a hobo when I grew up during the mid-show "host chats up the dorks" segment Man, you were a tool. Posted by: Bill from INDC at November 10, 2005 03:01 PM Can't really argue with that. But if memory serves, the color of my shirt was pretty wild. Posted by: Hubris at November 10, 2005 03:04 PM I was on TV as captain of the Scholar Bowl team and had my picture in the paper with the Scholar Bowl team. Caption? "Nerd Herd" In the article, I was referred to as "head nerd." And Hubris is right, you gotta beat the groupies off with a stick.
