Quick Comment on the Consequences of ID
Posted by Dorkafork Here's an example, destroyed here. This is what happens when you belittle science, when you deny science's authority. You create fertile breeding ground for hucksterism. The first story follows a typical ID narrative to the T. A brave maverick, turning the conservative, close-minded establishment on its ear. It "goes against almost a century of thinking". But, hey, what does the scientific community know anyway? Best quote: "All of us who are not quantum physicists are looking at Dr Mills's data and we find it very compelling". Yeah, all of us guys who don't have the expertise to understand this think it's the bees knees! Looks a-ok to an unqualified observer! Posted by Dorkafork at November 9, 2005 02:31 AM | TrackBack (1) Trackback PingsTrackBack URL for this entry: CommentsI know this is snarky, but ID deserves snark. I'm planning some less snarky posts on ID in the near future. Posted by: dorkafork at November 9, 2005 04:02 AM Is there really any 'research' being done on ID? I read a New Yorker article a few months back that talked about that Behe guy and explained his thesis, and about the only other real 'scientist' in the field, and it sounded like their 'theories' (which are not even consistent with each other) had already been debunked. They might as well have students read about the 'science' done in the 1800s to prove that Noah's flood literally flooded the entire world. Posted by: milowent at November 9, 2005 09:03 AM "We're becoming a laughingstock, not only of the nation but of the world." I know it's wildly unpopular to care what the rest of the world thinks of us, but when we rule against evolution, we cross the border into tin-hat land. How can we expect to remain world leaders when we are moving backwards in science? We've opened the door for the religious conservatives, and they've stuck their big ol' foot in. Prepare for other "theories" to be disproven. That whole gravity thing seems fishy to me. Posted by: Vaughn D. Taylor at November 9, 2005 09:13 AM Out of curiosity, if ID is to blame for this, why is the article from the Gaurdian, a British newspaper not particularly noted for it's love of ID. Posted by: Dave Justus at November 9, 2005 10:26 AM Dorka, are you saying that ID is responsible for breeding hucksterism or just another example of it? I also like to make a distinction between "scientific" ID which is generally just a stalking horse for creationism and theological ID, which is, well, theological, and has nothing whatever to do with the creationist debate because it has nothing to do with evolution. Posted by: gail at November 9, 2005 11:01 AM I'm not trying to say ID is directly to blame for it, but this is an example of what the kind of thinking behind ID can lead to. It is not the only cause of scientific illiteracy, but it leads to scientific illiteracy. And stories like the above are a result. Beliefs like ID are going to have a practical result beyond making Kansas a laughingstock, or having an effect on America's competitiveness in science. gail: A bit of both;) Well, maybe not "hucksterism", since there's not much of a profit motive. I remember you discussing that before on your site, and I have no problem with that distinction. Nothing wrong with a theological discussion, especially one that correctly identifies itself as a theological discussion. It's when creationism tries to pass itself off as science, when they try their hardest to spread utter bullshit, that's when I get irritated. Posted by: dorkafork at November 9, 2005 11:44 AM No. This is the kind of thinking that can lead to ID, as it has lead to all sorts of crackpot theories in the past. Don't put your cart before the horse. Posted by: mcg at November 9, 2005 12:17 PM You know, it's a great deal of fun watching people get their panties in a twist about ID. A question for all you "scientific experts" out there: Where did tRNA come from? You cannot have RNA to Protein (let alone DNA -> RNA -> Protein) unless you have a way to translate RNA into Protein. IOW, you need tRNA (transfer RNA). But evolution works on pre-existing items. So, where did the tRNA come from? What was the point in attaching an amino acid to a "carrier", before there were ribosomes and mRNA? What's that you say? You have no idea? Neither does anyone else? You can't explain at all how one of the key features needed for all life as we know it came about? So much for evolution explaining how we came about. Oh, you say you're sure that science will figure it out, someday? That's nice. Feel free to keep your faith. But don't bitch about other people clinging to their faiths, when you're (just as irrationally) clinging desperately to yours. The biggest hucksters in the world are the people claiming tha tscience has it all figured out. And you chumps have all bought the snake-oil, hook, line, and sinker. Congratulations.
