Yep, Blog Still Sleeping

Posted by Bill

But I'd like to point out frequent commenter TallDave's amazing patience and resilience whilst debating the Pandagonites in this miserable thread. Hats off to you, sir! Futile, but impressive.

I have a comment towards the end addressing Jesse Taylor's defense of his constant use of profanity as political expression. It ends with "Taylor is the blogospheric embodiment of Jenny's angry boyfriend in Forrest Gump. He runs around frothing, and then falls back on 'It's just this lying son of a bitch, Johnson!' when he apologizes for his violent outbursts."

"And I don't know about you, but that line makes me laugh every time."

Of course the comparison isn't quite accurate, as Taylor doesn't so much "apologize" as boldly reassert the legitimacy of his hateful invective. But you get the idea.

Spot on about Taylor. And to think: of the two Pandagonites, he's the stable one.

And to think: you're completely wrong, this entry is entirely fatuous, and yet, somehow...I'm still entirely entertained by a thread of people repeating the same inane argument over and over again about what a horrible, hateful person I am.

The best part is that I'm not hateful - I just curse, you jackass. :)

Posted by: Jesse at September 20, 2005 11:41 AM

Would you say that you hate President Bush, all that he stands for and his policies?

Posted by: Bill from INDC at September 20, 2005 12:40 PM

If cussing has no meaning, then why cuss.

And glad to see you're not dead Bill.

Posted by: rbj at September 20, 2005 12:43 PM

Well, Bill, what are you doing then, talking in your sleep?

Makes too much sense for that...

Posted by: Baron Bodissey at September 20, 2005 02:40 PM

I just came from reading that thread and "amazing patience and resilence" are spot on. My hat is off to TallDave. Kinda reminded me of the most recent Hitchens-Galloway encounter.

Posted by: Salt Lick at September 20, 2005 02:43 PM

Ahh, thats the stuff.
Thanks for the fix Bill.

You know, I used the f-word on my blog one time and my Dad called me on it. I was really ticked at him, but I didn't realize at the time how much it could turn some people off.

If you are writing to persuade, conservative and precise use of language is key. If you are writing to blow off steam, preach to the choir or just have a pep rally for your opinions, well--go to town, but I think serious people are less likely to take you seriously.

Brendan Nyhan criticized Eric Alterman recently for not being precise with his language. Alterman basically accused President Bush of some heinous intention. Alterman countered that his regular readers would know that wasn't his intent, whether his words said so or not. How does that help new viewers to his page who are looking for thoughtful points of view on the other side of the political spectrum?

It pushes them away.

Think I need a nap too.

Posted by: Nancy at September 21, 2005 01:20 PM

I have an email group from my high school. They stay quite active (Classof 61) & their mental aquity is good.

One or two will lapse into foul language and the reaction is immediate....a total shutdown by the rest. Our impression is the cussing is the result of a lack of capability to carry your arguement. Cursing and insults as demeaning and indicate your lack of all respect for the person to whom you communicate.

There are no options to this....

UM...

I think "Jesse" is a woman. At least that's the impression I go when reading her post on clothes she was going to throw out and included "old lingerie."

I did a post on her cursing and had to change all the personal pronouns from masculine to feminine after I read that.

Posted by: Rick Moran at September 22, 2005 01:30 PM

Do I look even dumber now?

Yep.

I just read Mr. Taylor's comment on this post and realized there were TWO bloggers at Pandagon...

Oh well...I guess I should change all those pronouns back...

Bill,

Pretty please tell me that the reason your blog has been sleeping for so long is because you are spending your time doing valuable research on Cindy Sheehan and her minions in preparation for their invasion of DC today and that you will be spending the next three days in their midst photographing and interviewing and otherwise documenting a new species of moonbat!

Posted by: Lornkanaga at September 23, 2005 10:09 AM

Thanks Bill.

I'm amazed anyone noticed.

It was fun, though, demolishing faulty memes.

Posted by: TallDave at September 23, 2005 11:48 AM

Skippy?
Shut up, charge your camera's battery, and get all sorts of moonbat hunter like you were back in the day.... Tomorrow your turf is gonna get swamped with ex-hippies, neo-hippies, and just flat out lunatics.

I expect...nay, demand!, you go back to your roots, toots.

Posted by: TC@LeatherPenguin at September 23, 2005 03:15 PM

Bill is to moonbatology what John James Audubon was to birds.

Posted by: Salt Lick at September 23, 2005 04:20 PM

this is what i said at pandagon--don't know if it will post.

hmmm...all i can contribute is what i learned in grad school. It matters not if the debate is politics, quantum field theory, or whether the White Stripes are married, divorced, or siblings...the first person to resort to profanity looses the argument.

Posted by: matoko kusanagi at September 23, 2005 10:12 PM

Huh, at my underfunded public high school I learned that the first person who uses the wrong homonym loses the argument.
