I've Got Nothing
Posted by Bill Nope, nothing. Hmmmm. Maybe ... Naw. ... ... Hey! Did you hear that the Pope hates Harry Potter? "It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly," wrote Cardinal Ratzinger. Curse you, Potter! The Pope's condemnation is especially surprising in light of the series' popularity with Catholic priests, many of whom are known to own a great deal of Harry Potter novels, coloring books, toys, themed candy and children's sleeping bags. Supplemental zaniness: "Harry Potter: Witchcraft Repackaged - Making Evil Look Innocent" Posted by Bill at July 13, 2005 07:41 AM | TrackBack (0) CommentsHeh. Posted by: rbj It's just a marketing ploy. Posted by: leelu Your mention of Harry’s popularity with Catholic priests is offensive and insulting, and crosses the line of acceptable public discussion. In other words: Great work! I loved it!! Posted by: jmaster I can't believe people are still kicking around the idea that the Harry Potter books are a manual for witchcraft and Satanism. I have read the books numerous times and they do not contain directions for Satanic rituals or spells. In fact the spells the characters perform are just fantasy, part of the backdrop. The books are really about Good Vs. Evil, with Good winning through not sinking to the level of Evil. You'd think that message would resonate with Christians everywhere. Posted by: Wacky Hermit "Filmmaker and occult expert Caryl Matrisciana explains the dangers of the Harry Potter series and how the books portray a lifestyle diametrically opposed to that of the Christian." No duh. So does James Bond. And a whole lot of other things, too. It might - MIGHT - be an issue if that sort of stuff was, you know, REAL; but since it isn't I don't see the point. And, aside from the whole "all magic is evil" thing, all of the occult stuff is quite clearly shown as EVIL in the books! Unless kids are seriously going around trying to turn rats into cups or something, I don't really see the harm. Posted by: TheRoyalFamily The funny thing is, RoyalFamily, that the sort of witchcraft portrayed as "good" in the books is only a hazard to Christianity if it actually works. If it doesn't and it's only imaginary, then curious kids will take a stick and try to turn a rat into a cup, see that it doesn't work, and conclude that witchcraft has no power in real life. You'd think real Christians would WANT kids to do this more often, so they would conclude that witchcraft is not worth it. That some of them don't just shows that there are Christians who really do believe in the power of witchcraft-- that it's possible for a child to say some pseudo-Latin words and wave a stick around and tap into some evil power by mistake. I find that particularly ironic. By the way, I got my child a wand. She doesn't play with it any more after her attempts to levitate objects with the spell "Wingardium Leviosa" failed miserably, as I knew they would. She does, however, say her prayers every night. Score one for Christianity. Posted by: Wacky Hermit |
