... that we all joined a group of people just like us!

Joke aside, there exists a rhetorical need in the blogosphere. Serial centrist mockers Michelle Malkin and Katherine Lopez will be unpleasantly surprised to learn what the acronym "RINO" actually stands for ...

Well, I knew RINO stood for "Republican in Name Only." What I did not know was that it also stood for violating intellectual property rights. What would the people at Robert McNeel & Associates think? Is it that hard to make an original logo?

Republican in Name Only???? I was mislead, the LLamas said it stood for Republicans wIth eNormous gOnads.

The last time I checked general shapes weren't intellectual property. Think of all the companies with logos that are derivatives of Yin and Yang. For a more specific argument, it would be like saying Van Gogh held the IP rights to all paintings of people with only one ear.

Yeah, that sounds a lot like me, at least the “I” part. Of course, parties change over time, but to my way of thinking, the social conservative wing of the current Republican party are the true “Republicans in name only” RINO’s.

I identified strongly with the Republican party circa 1976-1984. Back when George H.W. Bush said that he was proud to be a “card carrying member of the ACLU”. Those were my formative years, and when I first registered to vote, I went Republican.

Back then, the social conservative/evangelical crowd was heavily Democrat. As many of those folks (like my parents) became disillusioned with the direction their party was heading, the Republican party basically recruited them, and in response shifted the parties platform. All IMO, of course.

I understand and appreciate that this move helped bring the R’s to power, and keep them there for many years. But it also drove me out of the party around 1990, and I have been an avowed “I” ever since.

I tend to vote more R than D, but sometimes grudgingly. I am convinced that the Republicans can’t win without the conservative vote. But I am also convinced that they can’t win with out the RINO (new definition) votes. Balancing the demands of each group is surely a significant challenge for the party leadership. I think they understand that, but sometimes I really have to wonder….

Except this isn't a general shape. It's the sillouette of the logo used for Rhino3D. This is not claiming that since Rhino3D uses a Rhino head for its logo that you cannot use a Rhino head for yours (your Van Gogh example), this is saying that you cannot just go and take Rhino3D's logo and use it for yours. Additionaly, the Yin-Yang symbol is public domain, while Rhino3D's logo isn't. So none of your examples fit.

I made the logo, with a stock photograph and entirely with open source software. I made it free for anyone to use.

So bug off.

Thanks, Bill.

EDIT to the above:

I traced it using the GIMPs bezier tool using a rhino head as a guide.

I have never seen or heard of Rhino 3D until I saw it here.

Sorry for the comment spam: I've done a post about this, where I recommended that everyone take down the logo, which I have done. You may want to do the same.

I went and looked, and it does look quite similar.

I don't want to get cross-ways with anyone.

Apologies all around for the confusion and problems.

Doesn't matter if you traced it, and just because you used open source software doesn't mean you're free to rip people off. A stock photograph? So, what collection is it in, how much did it cost? Please, do tell. Or does "stock photograph" simply mean you found it via a Google image search? Need I remind you of Ward Churchill's career in art fraud? Please, get a modicum of originality.

JSchuler -

Were you born an uneccessarily combative dick? Did it come later?

It came from many years of hard work and practice.

I emailed Bob McNeel a few minutes ago and asked him. If he objects to our logo, I'll email the RINOs to take it down.

Logo problem potentially solved. See here for details.

On the bright side, I found a good logo for your Democratic counterparts (warning: may also have intellectual property issues).

jmaster, I think we're identical twins separated at birth or something. LOL

You just told the story of my political life. Early strong identifiction with GOP... disillusionment in late 80's... went Indie in 1990... trend of voting GOP about 2/3 of the time since then... remain devout Indie to this day...

Heh... small world.
