George Lucas Eats His Foot, Again

Posted by Bill

Compounding his infliction of the two most recent films and the ruined DVD originals on a captive audience of Star Wars fans, here's another good reason to dislike George Lucas:

"You have to remember, this whole thing was written thirty years ago, says Lucas of the original Star Wars story, which he wanted to reflect "how Ceasar came to power" in a sci-fi setting. At the time, Nixon and the Vietnam war were deeply affecting the director, who had most recently completed American Graffiti. "A very powerful and technological superpower trying to take over a country of peasants was big on my mind," he says. "The fact that history repeats itself is a little shocking." -- Lucas in the current print issue of Premier Magazine.

Because, you know, when I think of American troops in Iraq (and Vietnam, for that matter) I can't help but think of Imperial Storm Troopers. And Iraqi insurgents and the Viet Cong both give me this total Luke and Leia vibe.

What a pompous dick.

Methinks Georgie has been partaking from the same bong as the Wachawski Brothers.

whaaa....???

You know, sometimes artists and creators should just shut the * up.

in 1977 no one, NO ONE, was drawing a Vietnam/Tatooine parallel.

So who does this make Jane Fonda?

He may be a pompous dick, but he is a rich one.

I think he would have done much better to have gotten a good screenwriter to have written the scripts for the first two prequels, but for some reason Lucas thinks he could do better.

Dayum, Maybe Dr. Shackleford is onto something.

Gee, and here I was thinking the whole thing was based upon an archetypal myth, young man leaves home and winds up conquoring the forces of evil. So I guess that 30 years ago George Lucas already had Karl Rove in mind as the emperor. I bet Karl had planted that seed in his mind; Karl is the all powerful Jedi supermaster.

"A very powerful and technological superpower trying to take over a country of peasants was big on my mind,"

Wow, those rebels were a bunch of peasants all right. PRINCESS Leia, a bunch of defecting Imperials, and the such. Yes, I think of peasants a lot when there are robots that can do all the hard physical labor.

Lucas' best film was American Graffiti, in which he had a very naturalistic style. Which is maybe why his overwrought space fantasies are so wooden

I think it's some sort of initiation rite. Sorta like how all teen queen pop idols have to prove they can dress like streetwalkers, Hollywood Directors/Actors have to say something stupid and anti-American.

LMAO at the Zarch as JarJar.

For 2 yr I have wondered about you folks: were you Iraqi, what would you want your son to do? Forget Star Wars; does anybody remember Red Dawn????

Were I Iraqi, I would want my son to participate in the politcal process, rather than bombing police stations.

Anyway, Lucas! "A very powerful and technological superpower trying to take over a country of peasants"- this existed where in the Star Wars universe? If you're going to go with moonbattery, you go with the Third Reich/Bush is Hitler/Bush is Vader angle, not Vietnam. Jesus Christ man, do you even watch your own movies?

So YOU were that guy in the back row screaming at the Russians to capture the Wolverines and bring peace and prosperity to Michigan - I always wondered who that guy was. . . . There were so many of us who didn't appreciate the nobility of those who collaborated with the invaders; why don't I feel better knowing you are on my side?

As for the last 2 movies being "bad", Lucas has always said these wouldn't be his favorite ones to write because they detail, agonizingly, how the good guys LOST. There is just no good way to tell the story of a colossal screw-up.

I'm hoping he changes his mind and goes ahead with Episodes 7-9 so he can bring the story to a close.

As for the paranoid fantasies about "Stormtroopers in Iraq", while I disagree with it this should never be dismissed completely. A broken clock is right twice a day and once in awhile the Emperor really is a Sith. Palpatine reminds me of Hillary Clinton but is that just my rightwing bias talking?

No, I'm pretty consistently in favor of democracy, unlike some people.
