Unfortunate Wording
Posted by Bill An AFP lead paragraph: LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Accused pop icon Michael Jackson has been crowned America's most foolish person for the third straight year, snatching the dishonour from the likes of a murderer and US President George W. Bush. (Emphasis mine) Interesting syntax, that. (Via Julie Gerleman) Posted by Bill at April 1, 2005 01:00 PM | TrackBack (2) Comments...so, the question is, did they drop a comma, or did the LA Dog Trainer mean it as written? Haven't read them in so long I have no basis from which to draw an inference. Anyone? Beuller?? Posted by: leelu This comes from Agence France Press (AFP). Not altogether surprising considering the source. :) Posted by: willow Any sentence that includes Michael Jackson and snatch is suspect. Posted by: JWebb Remove the "a" from "a murderer" and it's a lot worse. Posted by: Mark J Unfortunately, some probably think including the "a" was the unfortunate part of the wording. Posted by: Donna B. A poll done in Los Angeles gets picked up by a French news agency and Bush is the #3 most foolish person of the year. Well, knock me over with a feather! I'm also willing to bet that the question was *NOT* open-ended, either. Bush's name was probably at the very top of a list of only 10-15 people from which to pick. Posted by: Jimboy Unfortunate Wording? This implies an accidental or inadvertent turn of phrase. What makes you think this was inadvertent? |
