What to Do With "Desert Vampires?"

I'm not quite sure of my position on the torture and grisly execution of an Iranian serial killer, but Goldstein makes a superb hard-assed argument at the end of this post.

If the punishment is to fit the crime - while at the same time having some redeeming value as a deterrent - it should be based on the manner in which the victim lost his or her life. If more than one victim, more than one punishment, each one attempting to replicate what was done to each victim, but until the last of the punishments, stopped just short of death. There need be no hurry about the process. I might even provide for a period of respite, recovery, between each punishment administered.

Sometimes the simplest justice is the best. And this way, the guilty would have selected their own manner of death, by the nature of their crime.

I feel so diminished! Don't you feel diminished?
