Bush's Comments (UPDATED)

Posted by Bill

For the record, I didn't find anything particularly surprising or embarrassing about President Bush's secretly-taped comments that were just released by historian Doug Wead. Panning rivals, discussing (and implying) former drug use and outlining political strategy with the Evangelical base all seem pretty much par for the course.

Trey Jackson has CNN video that includes audio clips of the recordings.

You be the judge.

UPDATE: Vodka Pundit highlights a good point by Mickey Kaus.

I thought that Bush's private statements about not "kick(ing) gays" in order to score political points with the religious right were somewhat admirable and sincere, though I'm also aware that many gays aren't buying his execution of the sentiment.

Look, Look, the President said a naughty word!

"Stand up for a system that will not allow this kind of crap to go on"

Impeach Him!!!

Next week his childhood Nanny releases tapes of the President, aged three, shouting "Willy, Willy"! and Oliver releases a statement condemning the innate racism of our society.

I haven't seen any mention of this - Linda Tripp got in trouble for recording her conversations with Lewinski. Are these recordings legal or can this guy get in trouble, too?

let's cut to the chase-

from the abcnews article:

(")Doug Wead, the author of the new book "The Raising of a President(")

oh! a NEW BOOK, not on the Times best seller list...

and:

(")Wead said his publisher insisted on listening to the tapes to confirm anonymous sources cited in the book. The New York Times then got wind of the tapes, and from there, it "all became unraveled," Wead said.(")

unraveled... the dog ate my homework. Wead owns the tapes, and golly I guess the Times had a guy stashed in his publisher's wastebasket taking notes... no, wait, the Times put a gun to Wead's head and sweat it out of him... wait that wasn't it NOBODY at the Times has a gun- it was, uh, er, they made him brunch with Maureen Dowd and she threatened to see him again if he didn't cough up the goods.

Wead:

1)is selling a book
2)has no honor

Should be good for a couple of weeks of Angry Left epilepsy. BTW, is that Gannon in your Total Fitness Ad?

Bill, while I agree that there's nothing shocking, or even terribly interesting there, the content of the conversation is of much less consequence than the fact that it was taped.

Is it not illegal to tape a conversation without consent?

And now, he feels a sense of regret? For what? Doing it, or making certain that the world now knows that he did?

He can spin it any which way he chooses, but the fact remains, he is now publicizing his actions...and his subsequent book, that arose from the repeated betrayal of a trusting 'family friend.'

His fame will be short-lived, but his betrayal and eventual selling-out of the Bush family will be with him forever.

Good.

jmflynny,

I asked around a little. In Pennsylvania, all parties must agree to being recorded before you can make a tape but apparently in other states the rules are different. It's possible that in Texas this was not illegal.

He claims that he recorded calls from legal states.

To me the betrayal angle is obvious; I agree.

I was just commenting on the content of the conversations. Nothing shocking.

It's amazing, but the lefties who can't quite spin a scandal out of these 7 y/o tapes are now hinting the tapes are "fake" and/or just another KarlRoveEvilGenius(tm) scam.

Comeon, guys and gals, wake up. Even the NYTimes was forced to admit that the private GW is remarkably like the public GW. A WYSIWYG President (and a damned decent regular guy).
