A Moment of Honesty from Oliver (UPDATED)
Posted by Bill Wizbang has been on an Oliver Willis kick lately, pointing out that he's dishonest, irrevocably warped by ideology and not particularly bright. In related, breaking news, fish swim and bears crap in the woods. Anyhow, under the latest thread, Oliver comments candidly: You guys have written about 5 entries about me in the last 24 hours. LOL. Oliver loves links. He loves attention. These things give O-Dub a wee pelvic pup-tent quicker than a Redskins cheerleader skin-mag coated in delicious twinkie filling. And though I'm briefly giving him a bit of attention, he'll get no respect, links or traffic from me, specifically after he used a picture of dead Iraqi children to make a nasty political point prior to the US election. And he'll also get no serious discussion about any of his ludicrous posts; attempting honest debate with Willis is simply naive and pointless. So, I'd like to propose some widespread "Willis Guidelines" that will minimize the perception of importance around his parasitic bomb-throwing, while still strip-mining him as a bloated natural resource of 24-karat comedic gold: 1. Henceforth, no one should attempt any debate with Willis - ignore his specific incendiary points. Do we need more highly detailed refutation of Oliver's illogic? I'm here to tell you, the evidence locker is full. 2. Henceforth, the only mention or engagement of Willis should constitute merciless, superficial mocking intended to elicit laughs. This ceases the cruel maintenance of Oliver's delusion that he's engaged in real political debate, yet continues to nurture his value as an unintentional humorist. Willis is like the racist, blogospheric version of Carrot Top. 3. Henceforth, no links. No traffic. If one must mention an excerpted bit of Willisian stupidity, simply quote or paraphrase it, but don't give him the oxygen or money of visits. As a bonus, when he continues his slide into irrelevance and comes further unhinged, he'll use more exorbidant means to attract attention, perhaps intensifying the yuks factor mentioned in guideline number 2. Please consider taking the Oliver Willis Pledge: Merciless, funny mocking, or no mention. Blissful ignorance of his agenda.* Most importantly: No links, no traffic. I believe in a better world, do you? Good - then let's make it happen. Thank you.
* Until and unless one opts to parade him like a vile show pony in order to help win another election. Thanks, Ollie! PS - Don't confuse my appeal for general advocacy of the coarsening of political debate - Oliver isn't debating politics, he's screaming for attention. Ignore him or shame him for laughs. UPDATE: In the midst of an otherwise silly post that features made-up quotes attributed to me, the Llamas come up with an interesting new swear-word: I'd like to float a new one myself: the new hip blogging swear word needs to be "Cousin Oliver." They show good form there, top notch. But they link him, which is a no-no. UPDATE: Ace is correct; he is the master of merciless Willis-mocking - perhaps the originator of the art form - but he's also made the consistent error of linking the bastard. UPDATE: Some excellent mockery of Oliver's Democratic branding effort can be found here and here. UPDATE: This blogger updates Ollie's banner and tagline. Posted by Bill at February 7, 2005 12:01 AM | TrackBack (13) CommentsOn the chance that you're not joking, I'd like to disagree. By all means, LINK to his assinine attempts at logic. By not revealing his ignorance, you allow it to fester on. Certainly his is a lost cause, but every time you link, someone might join him in debate and persuade one of his regulars to look suspicously at the kool-aid. Do it for the children, Bill! :D Posted by: krakatoa I'm serious. Every link to Oliver validates him and actually puts money in his pocket. He's a clown. Debating him is like shooting fish in a barrel - he's not big enough (traffic-wise) to be a threatening or worthy target, and his mind is diseased with partisanship beyond almost anything else in the 'sphere, left or right. It's pointless. Ignore him and watch him freak out. Put it this way - I don't consider him a worthy opponent, though sometimes an amusing target. Posted by: Bill from INDC Even though a link from my 17th-tier blog would still give him no traffic, I hereby take the pledge. Posted by: ccwbass Done. Not that I've ever linked to him anyway. Posted by: Sharp as a Marble Exactly! And well said, too. Posted by: Captain Mainline Don't link to him? Hell, don't even bother reading him. I've been practicing that since...well, since my first visit to his blog. Better yet, the world would be best served if someone would take one for the team and set up a "here's today's Oliver nonsense" blog, so there would be only one person who actually visits OW to see what he's spouting today, then report to those who are interested. For the record, I wouldn't even bother reading the "proxy blog," because I just don't care what OW says. It's about the same as the blather spouted by that lunatic I used to pass every day when walking from the Metro stop to my office when I was working in DC. If I hadn't been forced to pass him, I wouldn't have heard anything he said, either. Ignore him. Let his support come from the naïve and his fellow lunatics. He's certainly not worth my time, and I've wasted too much of it on him just by posting this comment. Posted by: Boyd EXCELLENT. I never link to those lefty asshats or give them much mention anyway. They simply exist for my amusement. In fact, I think using "Cousin Oliver" is dangerously close to giving him name/brand recognition, although I definitely appreciate the mockery. Like Boyd, I'm almost embarassed to be acknowledging Cousin Oliver in this comment. But at least we're not talking about She-Who-Will-Not-Be-Named™. Posted by: Beth the VRW Conspirator Would it be ok to Googlebomb his site? I mean, is it ok to link to him with words like "filet-o-fish" or "Ass Plow"? Posted by: Sharp as a Marble Way ahead of you on this one, Bill. I've been blogging since last June and I've never linked him once. Heck, I don't think I've even mentioned him once. My personal code of ethics prevents me... Posted by: WoodysWoundup I'm even further ahead of you than Woody; I have no idea who you're talking about. I'm assuming that my ignorance constitutes compliance with the new guidelines. Posted by: John from WuzzaDem Done. And here's my mockery... Posted by: marc I'm not sure I'd call O-Dubya racist; he plays the race card stupidly and inconsistently, but 100% of his behavior can be explained by partisanship, not racism. He's reached Hesiod-like levels of juvenile trollery. Of course, I'd suggest laying off references to his race or weight, since those give him cover to remain self-righteous about the mockery. Posted by: Crank His clannishness and abuse of Malkin are racist. Posted by: Bill from INDC I want you to note that Rebrand-Democrat (my creation, along with Rob Port), contains zero links to Oliver's blog. There is only one link to his "Brand Democrat" site, buried away in the FAQ, and it's not a link to his site... it is a link to the Google Cache of his site. Kinda funny, considering that I think he almost gave me more visitors there with his "don't pay attention to them" post than Glenn Reynolds did when he linked. Posted by: Mark J Some astute chap over at Protein Wisdom suggested that a fitting nickname for O-Tub was the "Baghdad Blob". I sort of like it better than "Cousin Oliver", which is higher-brow than O-Tub really deserves. Posted by: Brett I reached a no-link no-mention resolution of my own after his reaction to the Iraqi election. I won't even quote him here--it was that dumb. Instead I quoted Kerry as my example of a defeatist Democrat hoping for the Iraqis to fail. But I digress. Consider me signed-on to your Oliver Willis Pledge. Posted by: Beck Thanks for the link, Bill. Posted by: marcus I'm in, Bill. Baghdad Blob is now on the same list ( of length two ) as Hesiod. Posted by: Roberts You know, I used to read Willis's stuff, due to Instapundit, who used to mention that Oliver was so good, he ought to be on TV. Sometime last fall, though, he just became unhinged. And while I'm on the topic, his Instapundit-bashing not only lacks sense, but is also a pretty spectacular display of ill-mannered childishness. Geez. If he's "like kryptonite to stupid," how in the world does he avoid killing himself? Posted by: Tony I posted this observation previously on another blog. When I was a kid, one of the other clowns on the Bozo Show in Chicago was Oliver O. Oliver. Now Oliver Willis has become a bozo. Coincidence? I think not. Posted by: Jim C. Well, you've really nailed the chubby one. His whole groove was, as Sammy in the Rat would say, to get a little attention, a little traffic. To be talked about. Like in the days of yore, when Glenn used to stroke him, encourage the poor boy, when Roly Ollie was worthy of a weekly link from the Instaone. He was once a genial, though a bit dim, liberal. Then he got Deanized and Kostipated...and the Glennster had to drop the link-hammer on the moonbat. Ouch! So be gentle...Oliver's a college dropout (or flunked out?) from Posted by: John© Oliver Who? He's not MY cousin. - Rich Willis Posted by: Rich Been saying so for, like, ages (scroll down to kobekko): Who IS this Willis person that you and Ace seem to think deserves your rebuttals? I don't get it. You both mention him as if his ideas counted for something ... instead of ignoring his ejecta, you bring his name and his pathologies before us as if you were members of the modern media trying hard to fairly represent both sides of the rationality continuum. Come ON. Posted by: kobekko I long ago decided not to link Oliver, DU or Kos or anybody similar. You can find it if you really want to see what they had to say. Posted by: SteveL |
