How To Win in Iraq

I'm impressed by the conclusions in this column by David Ignatius.

The Shiite majority is more-or-less committed to the goal of a peaceful, stable Iraq that doesn't pose a threat to its neighbors. They see what a failure the mad mullahs have made of Iran and don't want to go that route.

The Kurds in the north pretty much just want to be left alone in their tribal lands. They're too weak to pose a threat to any of their neighbors and only the strength of a united Iraq protects them from being swallowed up either by Turkey or Iran.

The Sunni are the Problem Children here: used to lording it over their neighbors by force of arms some haven't yet realized that their insurgents are outnumbered 20 to 1.

What I see as an acceptable exit strategy is to hold elections, arm and train the new Iraqi army, and let a freely elected, democratic government deal with its own internal problems. The Sunni will either join with the confederation or there'll be a "Night of the Long Knives" and they'll all be driven out or killed. In either case it's not our problem: it's their own choice whether to commit suicide or not.
