The sentiment expressed on this t-shirt might seem cute or tongue-in-cheek, but it's actually a foreign policy maxim that helped define the latter half of the 20th Century. I heartily endorse it.

While I agree that Our firepower has kept the peace in the past and will so in the future I think it's foolish to advertise peace that way.

I know from experience that Peace is often times more likely to happen by many other means then Firepower which in all cases is usually the last option available.

Maybe a "peace - through economic suppression" shirt would be more fitting?

Smoke -

It doesn't mean peace through USING superior firepower. it means peace through HAVING superior firepower ... with the WILLINGNESS to use it. What do you think makes the dominance of economic levers possible? We're specifically talking about America's firepower (often expressed via the UN), which guarantees the sovereignty of most civilized nations on Earth. Without a gun on teh table (or in the back pocket) none of the rest of what you speak of is humanly possible.

As part of your comment implies, it's the doctrine of deterrence, and it's what's kept the world free of a major world conflagration for 50 years. It's rendered partially obsolete by the new paradigm of irrational non-state players (terrorists), but if the old firepower suddenly didn't exist, many nations would very quickly and assuredly devolve into invading each other for territory and resources, a la Saddam Huessin, and the other 99.9% of recorded human history.

So "Peace Through Superior Firepower" is indeed a relevant statement. Besides, it's a joke. As the Llamabutchers would say, "Lighten up, Francis."

Not to mention, "Peace through trade embargo," or "peace through modernization and free trade" wouldn't sell very well.

I can't get past how very very cute that model is.

Okay, I can. everything this country has accomplished, every little brown person or Jew or homosexual this country has ever freed from oppression has been through either the use of force or the very real threat of it.

I absolutely agree with the sentiment.

When you have superior firepower, the other guy is more likely to avoid you.

Sort of like the school bully picks on the weak students, not the stronger ones.

Ok Bill, Thanks for explaining I understand what you're saying now. As always I appreciate the reply.

Good to see you "light, Francis." Hope you realize that's my version of "light" as well. :-)
