All potential empathy for Brian Williams is off ...

According to CBS Marketwatch, at a post-election wrap-up session, when a fellow panelist "mentioned that bloggers had had a big impact on the reporting on Election Day, Williams waved that point away by quipping that the self-styled journalists are 'on an equal footing with someone in a bathroom with a modem.'"

What a distasteful, arrogant comment. Will these people ever learn that there's no professional monopoly on information collection and presentation?

(Via Political Wire and IP)

UPDATE: Commenter Doug F coins it: bloggers are now the "latrine-hadeen!" Who has a modem in their bathroom, anyway?

UPDATE: Pennywit adds the slogan:

"The Latrine-hadeen - We are the sh**!"

Headi Hadeen? (I suddenly picture Harvey Korman from Blazing Saddles)

I've got it!

The latrine-hadeen!

Who needs a modem when you have wireless?!?

Posted by: Daddypundit [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 30, 2004 09:13 PM

Hey, just because YOU don't blog from your bathroom...

Posted by: Sobek [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 30, 2004 09:24 PM

Laptop with wireless, dude. I don't need any of the rest -- except the padded seat. My rear end might appreciate the cushioning ...

He underestimates the impact that a clear, authoritarian 'sounding' voice, and a good head of hair has played in his own success.

Self-important schmuck.

This is why I'm so very, very hesitant about audioblogging.

Hmm ... the "hadeen" suffix is old now. And "toilet-hadeen" doesn't have the same zip, although "latrine-hadeen" has a little bit of it.

Hmm ...

The Flush Brigade?
Info Dumpers?

I'll stop right there. Too scatological. I do have some slogans, though:

"We deal with more crap in a day than you will in a lifetime."

"It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it."

"Declarations from the throne."

"We are the sh**"

"Garbage in, Garbage out."

"My toilet has wireless. Does yours?"

Like any self-respecting blogger, I use a wireless connection ...

I'll stop right there. It's getting just

Guys sitting behind their computers with pajamas around their ankles?

Squat Squad?

So, who's working on the sidebar button? Should be much more interesting project than the "Jammies Brigade."

(off to contact Suzy Rice.)

I was away from the computer last night so this was the second story I read this morning....too bad I didn't read *in* the bathroom. Must look into that wireless setup.

Bill, given your post on Brokaw's advice to Williams, I think this comment by Williams proves that no good deed goes unpunished. Can I call him an idiot now?

Posted by: Retread [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 1, 2004 07:19 AM

Have at it.

A "distasteful, arrogant comment?" What did you expect of a former intern to Jimmy Carter -- humility?

Posted by: Salt Lick [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 1, 2004 07:58 AM

Nice photo. But I really think the debate about terminology is unnecessary.

I was going to post on Wi-Fi, but it looks like several others have already raised that point. What is interesting is that Brian Williams missed it.

Modem? What is that? A 'DSL modem' is really are router, as is a 'cable modem'. To use a modem in your bathroom you would also need a phone line.

Is Brian admitting that he uses 56k dialup from home? Or does he even use the Internet from home these days?

Posted by: King of Fools [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 1, 2004 11:16 AM

I don't have wireless, but I've got enough spare Cat 5 lying around to run an Ethernet jack from my router to the bathroom. Hmm.

Posted by: David Gillies [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 1, 2004 11:21 AM

For the bathroom you really need a commodem.

So, is Williams insulting women for multi-tasking with their ability to apply make-up at the same time as blogging?

Or, is Williams insulting the men for multi-tasking with their ability to sit on the throne while Blogging?

Or is Williams calling us bloggers exactly that, i.e, pieces of throne-related scatalogical material?

Posted by: blogsforblackwell [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 1, 2004 07:56 PM

Williams is going to crash on NBC. At least Joe Klein's comment was funny, albeit insulting. Brian apparently lacks the creativity of Klein; after seeing this comment, it is clear he is a boy among men. You wondered who we could make fun of once the bizarre Rather stepped aside? Get ready for the Dan Quayle of the mainstream media. This guy will be supplying us with some really idiotic quotes until the day he steps down.

Posted by: Garrett [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 1, 2004 10:27 PM

"Latrine-hadeen" is okay, but I think we can do better. For instance, all of these are better.

Headayeen
Poojahadeen
Bowel Qaeda
Excretaliban

And the slogan should be "Truth, Honor, Dooty."

Flush from their success dethroning Dan Rather, the pajamaheadeen ...

Posted by: Bill Faith [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 2, 2004 12:31 PM

What a moron. Any idiot would know that we all have 802.11 wireless in our bathrooms.

Sheesh...
