Overheard on Meet the Press (UPDATED)
Posted by Bill
Tim Russert: "Does George Bush have a mandate?" James Carville: "The only politician in America I know who has a mandate is Jim McGreevey, Tim ... hee-hyaw! hyaw! hyaw! hyaw!" Mary Matalin then bowed her head in shame. UPDATE: No, I'm not making that up - approximate quote, I'll post the transcript when it's up. Carville also cracked an egg on his head. UPDATE: Robert Cox has more. UPDATE: Captain Ed has more, including the link to the exact transcript, which doesn't bother to mention the "hee-hyaw! hyaw! hyaw! hyaw!" or even make a more sober reference to "(jackal-like laughter)." It's very possible that I imagined it. Posted by Bill at November 14, 2004 10:33 PM | TrackBack (10) CommentsI have never been able to figure out what Mary Matalin sees in that guy. Posted by: Ghost of a flea This from Carville, the paragon of liberal ideology? I can just hear him sniggering over his commentary now. Will the liberal thought police call him on this, I think not. Posted by: BoogyMan I crack up when I see the two of them together. She possesses a particular look, that when thrown his way, causes him to essentially back away and say "Yes, mommy." It's really pretty funny. Posted by: jmflynny I saw the interview; I think Carville said "only "politician" rather than "only person." Certainly he knows that there's more than one gay man in America. Even so, I'm surprised he forgot about Barney Frank. He probably would have gotten a lot of flak if he mentioned Frank, because he's not a dirty cheating homosexual like McGreevey. Posted by: Raving Atheist If a Republican had said that... (oh, never mind) If the lefty liberals were to hold themselves to the same set of rules they expect the rest of the world to adhere to, there wouldn't be a left left. Posted by: Remy Logan The line may or may not be funny (depending on your taste) but it's a line for Dennis Miller or Bill Maher. Just imagine if Karl Rove had said something like it... When I hear stuff like this from the left, I keep thinking that someday they will annoy enough of their "base" that a number of them will stop voting democrat... or perhaps they already have. Posted by: Jack Grey Is this the same show where he cracked an egg on his head? I must say, that Carville is a pretty damn fun loser---for a couple of weeks after the election, at least. Posted by: mcg This reminds me of another appearance James and Mary made on Russert a few years ago. Carville was promoting his book, "Stickin'," which was, he said (I never read it) about loyalty--specifically his loyalty to Clinton during the Monica mess. Russert was pressing him about some of the comments he had made about Paula Jones (mainly the one where he said if you drag a hundred dollar bill through enough trailer parks, you could find someone who'd say anything), as well as his comments about Kathleen Willey. Mary sat stone-faced while her husband justified the wholesale trashing of two women despite a fair amount of evidence that they were telling the truth. His basic point was that this was politics, and implied that his wife would have done the same thing to protect Bush 41. Russert, fair-minded guy that he is, asked Mary if that was true, and I'll never forget her response. She said (and I'm paraphrasing) "Looking back, I can honestly say that in all of the time I worked for President Bush, I never did a single thing that I'm ashamed of. I don't think James will be able to say that in a few years." Carville looked like a puppy that had been swatted on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper. He didn't utter a word in response. I don't get what she sees in him either. Posted by: Doug F I don't get what she sees in him either. Well, say what you will about the man - he's one handsome guy. Posted by: Bill from INDC >>Well, say what you will about the man - he's one handsome guy. Which one you talking about? Matalin or Carville? Posted by: CERDIP Ghost of a Flea, I heard 10". Posted by: Roundguy It's certainly gauche and inappropriate. I hope Mary Matalin gave him whatfor over that particular remark. --|PW|-- Posted by: pennywit It's the accent...that and the fact he's damn funny. I'm still laughing after that comment. I'm glad someone can get away with that. Posted by: Kin I understand blasting the double standard but nobody is really offended by it, right? Well, other than it being such a groan of a joke in the first place but that's about what you get out of him. I know he's a dirty guy in politics but at least he's being gracious at the moment, I guess. Posted by: Elric Roundguy, Posted by: mcg I had the good fortune of having Carville as a guest speaker at several of my poli-sci courses at LSU in the 90's. Although I disagree with him on virtually every issue, he is damned funny, and believe it or not he's very engaging and likeable in person. I still don't think that's enough to make a babe like Mary overlook is fuglyness, though. Must be rich and/or well-endowed. Posted by: dave f As a self-hating homo, I thought the McGreevey line was pretty funny. But the Boi from Troy was offended Posted by: jeff Uh Jeff? You're not supposed to self-hate. There are plenty of red staters and Republicans around to do that for you. Posted by: Bill from INDC Loon or not, Carville's probably a damn good father, and her spidey sense told her he would be such when she met him. Posted by: Jim "hyaw! hyaw! hyaw!" ? So apparently Carville laughs like a character in a Jack Chick comic. Wow. Posted by: Bryan C |
