Fun Hebrew Homonyms
Posted by Bill A reader e-mails: Have a good friend in NYC who's a hebrew scholar. He sent me the following about his dad wearing the button below. Kerry's campaign apparently "misfired" again. I'll let the story speak for itself:
"Did my father tell you about his Hebrew Kerry button? The democrats, trying to drum up more Jewish vote, printed campaign buttons with "Kerry" spelled phonetically in Hebrew. Unforturnately, no one told them that that spelling happens to be a Hebrew word. It means: "Seminal discharge"! Maybe we can save them for Clinton rallies..." Apparently, there was a 'dishonorable discharge' after all ... Posted by Bill at November 9, 2004 01:24 PM | TrackBack (11) CommentsThanks, slick. Posted by: Jeff G Wait a sec, 'homonym'? Seminal discharge? I think this post is groping towards homophobia. I'm telling Andr Posted by: jeff Maybe that's what Kerry meant when he said he had Jewish roots. Posted by: Attila Bite the wax tadpole! Posted by: Dean Esmay BREAKING: Madonna Calls for Troop Withdrawal from Iraq. This is big. Not sure how this will play at the White House, but it really has to put ALOT of presure on the Pentigon. Anyway's all those neocon's are gonna be like "Woah!". Posted by: Jim Kerry served on a boat in Vietnam with a lot of seamen. His Silver Star shows he has a lot of spunk. Just trying to get the obvious jokes out of the way. Posted by: dorkafork Hmm, I'm a little suspicious of this, but I'd LOVE for this to be true. First, I did a little transliteration thanks to this web page and found that the button transliterates to Q R Y The A is actually silent. So yes, this is "Kerry Edwards" in Hebrew. (Hebrew often omits vowels; they didn't exist in the original Hebrew alphabet. See the web page above for info.) Now it turns out that "QRY" is in the Bible; it is Strong's word number 07147. On that web page you can hear it pronounced; and if you have the proper Hebrew font installed you can see it the same way. Here is the definition they provide: 1. opposition, contrariness, encounter, contrary or hostile encounter That alone is pretty amusing; it's almost as if the button is trying to say Anyway, I know that modern Hebrew is quite a bit different than classical Hebrew but I'd like to see some verification before I believe this one. Posted by: mcg Just for fun, here's the first use of that word in the Bible, Leviticus 26:21---"QRY" is in bold: And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins. Posted by: mcg For even MORE fun: had they just added a silent Aleph to make "QRYA", the result would have been much better for the Kerry campaign: 1. called, summoned, called one Now this sounds more like "Car-ee" instead of "Kerry", but I think a little mispronunciation would have saved some embarrassment and even provided a positive subliminal effect---that is, assuming that the word still has a similar meaning today. Posted by: mcg mcg would be played by John Ratzenberger in the movie version of this post. Posted by: Joe R. the Unabrewer Talking of seminal discharges, did u see this latest GROSS Sullivan story: http://jameswolcott.com/archives/2004/11/saddle_sore.php Posted by: jeff Joe: LOL :) What can I say, this struck me as Snopes material. From Kurdo's World: Scenario 2: Watching news with an old man. Posted by: Dave Schuler Just a quick note (and, I thought he was a lieutenant... I guess they demoted him before he was discha... oh, never mind.)... A lesson I learned some 20+ years ago; I can still hear his voice now: "There is no 'Q' in Hebrew." I wonder what Hazan Asher would say about the "new age" Hebrew. Posted by: Lysander The reader who sent the story said that his friend reaffirmed that his translation is correct. He's looking for a third party reference for me to post. Posted by: Bill from INDC Karl Rove strikes again. Posted by: pajama_jihad Bill, thanks for following up. I really want this to be true! :-) Posted by: mcg I didn't realize everyone was going to be so skeptical. 1. There IS a Q in Hebrew if you use the "scholarly" transliteration. This distinguishes between the letter "kaf" or K and the letter "qof" or Q. They're pronounced the same way. On the Kerry button, they use a qof. 2. The button does say "Edwards" in Hebrew, but usually they use a double "vav" to mean W, since there is no W in modern Hebrew. (Probably was in Biblical Hebrew.) 3. Here is a page that describes what you're looking for. A "baal keri" is a man who has had a seminal emission. Look, Jewish law deals with every aspect of one's life, so even though this seems a little weird, it's part of life, and therefore it's part of Jewish law. That said, a friend of mine once remarked about very similar stuff, "If the goyim [gentiles] knew about this, we'd have pogroms." Well, they do, and we don't. Apparently. Posted by: Attila |
