Pardon Our Dust
Posted by Bill The recent software upgrade has caused some oddities in the site's style template. Renovation is underway and will hopefully be completed by tomorrow. Thanks for your patience. In the meantime, check out Ace's parody of "The Apprentice:" TRUMP: All right. I gave you all a task to perform. It was a difficult task, but you lost. You had to organize a political campaign, bring your message to the public, energize your base, win over independent voters, and then prevail in the most hotly-contested presidential campaign in fifty years. You lost. What went wrong? You get the picture; read the whole thing. UPDATE: Oh yeah, and I second what she said: Suddenly, formerly sane blogger Layne and tons of other lefty bloggers are having a grand old time insulting, denigrating and slurring Christians. And what he said: On reflection, it seems to me a very bad idea to try and topple Senator Specter from what in the ordinary course of events would be his Chairmanship. The Left's getting frothy(er) and the Right's getting a wee greedy, so it looks like it's time to encourage a little moderation in the political climate. Respect for sober centrism may not be sexy, but at least it's a sane and effective way to conduct business. More later. UPDATE: Actually, let the leftie bloggers wallow in conspiratorial madness for awhile - it's not quite healthy, but it's sure fun to watch. UPDATE: And more ... ... it remains necessary to keep reminding people that there are not enough conservatives in this country to gain a governing majority. It is easy to lose sight of that undeniable fact just after a sweeping win. But if the center-right does forget, it will be back in the minority in two short years. I laughed when I first heard the term christophobia. After this week I believe its a legitimate term now. Posted by: John Bill: Are you sure you got that last link right? I'm not seeing that quote there. Posted by: jmaster Yes. 12th paragraph. Posted by: Bill from INDC I'd just like to point out that Hugh Hewitt is bringing his own considerable weight to bear in supporting Specter and trying to get the anti-Spectr factions at places like the NRO to take a breath and back away. The effort to stop Arlen Specter from gaining the chairmanship of the Committee on the Judiciary continues, though Karl Rove's comments yesterday signal the president's confidence that Specter will get the job done. I haven't persuaded anyone at The Corner yet, so time to try again. Opponents of Specter have to ask themselves a few questions. Hugh's questions are excellent. Posted by: Darleen Apparently, I am having some browser issues. The post#1091 link takes me to Sunday’s post, and not today’s. Makes much more sense now. I thought I was losing it. Thanks. Posted by: jmaster Darleen - Both of those are the posts that are linked in my post - don't you ever click on the links? ;-) Posted by: Bill from INDC [blushes as she realizes she didn't click on all the links....] sorry.... will be quiet for now.... Posted by: Darleen The "center-right" will be in a minority in 2 years? Where, exactly? Not in the House of Rep, the single most important organ of government. Democrats have yet to adjust that Republicans control the House (perhaps Bill Clinton's most monumental failure, if you're a Democrat), and that the very earliest the Democrats could regain control would be 2012, after the 2010 census and further re-districting (but by then, more House seats will have shifted to the South, just as they did in 2000). Not in the Supreme Court. We all know that story, and that's why Arlen "pay attention to ME" Specter is a story right now. In any case, the Supreme Court is controlled by "center-right" justices now. The Senate? That's doubtful in the extreme. The White House? GWB will occupy the WH in 2006, by which time a Republican will have occupied the WH for 26 of the preceding 38 years. After some thought, I have discovered the answer. The Republicans will be a minority in the minds of Democrats! Of course. The answer was obvious. Posted by: MD MD - You are kidding, right? Where will it become a minority? IN THE ELECTORATE. Bush only won by 3 pts, with a coalition of his conservative base and moderate Repubs and independents. If conservatives overreach, moderates like me will turn on the Republicans very, very quickly, especially in the midterm elections. Hubris like yours will be the downfall of what you may think is a permanent "new majority." Posted by: Bill from INDC Let's not construct straw men. Neither I nor the original post addressed a "permanent new majority." They addressed the situation in 2 years. Posted by: MD Admonishment well taken, but the fact remains that I was talking about the electorate. There is no conservative majority, and the quickest way to bring down any airs of the center-right's lasting majority will be the midterm elections. If social conservatives get too greedy, they'll shoot themselves in the foot. It's all about realistic choices about the agenda, choices that the Dems were not rational enough to make as a whole. Will the right repeat their mistakes? Social conservatives are notoriously prone to forcefully frame and push an agenda that invites backlash. Posted by: Bill from INDC |
