Comment Registration

Posted by Bill

I'm currently working on installing comment registration after another barrage of spam attacks. You now need to sign up for a Typekey registration ID and password in order to comment at INDC. I'm still performing tweaks on the style template, so the comments section may be temporarily odd in appearance.

I hope this doesn't put off regulars, but I had little choice. Thanks for your patience.

We'll still love you, Bill. :-)

See? That's what you get for prolific, insightful and witty writing. No good deed goes unpunished.

If you'd just toiled in obscurity like me, you wouldn't have any comment spam problems.

Registration of comments is the first step on a slippery slope to comment confiscation. ;)

Yeah, what Boyd said! Boo-hoo, poor Bill! The moonbats harass him, so he has to use TypeKey!

Meanwhile, some of us can't get even one troll of our own!

Heh. Thing is, it's not even a moonbat. It's some loser that keeps dropping links to a lame cartoon/porn site. Not to mention all the auto-spammers dropping cialas/porn/viagra/online poker links.

Hello! I just love your website, and appreciate all the wonderful informations it contains! Please click here for bestiality pix and granny sex.

Posted by: Watcher [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 5, 2004 10:25 PM

Very funny. But how can I tell that the badger at your site is a grandma?

Posted by: Bill from INDC [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 5, 2004 10:27 PM

At least most folks are using the same registration service.

Hey Bill, I need some Cialas and Viagra, so my boyfriend will be of use when we watch porn. And I'm already registered.

See, you cannot stop us. ;)

Ah, I'm in. Thanks Bill. Sorry you had to adopt this but that's the way it is on the Wild Wild WWW.

Posted by: mcg [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 5, 2004 11:18 PM

Damn, typekey doesn't work very good in my RSS reader. Oh well, it's not like I have that many interesting things to say!

Posted by: Sharp as a Marble [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 5, 2004 11:36 PM

Well, this is quite the predicament.

My Mennonite heritage forbids me from taking the kind of oath that TypeKey requires.

But I think you're worth the chance of eternal damnation, Bill.

See you in Hell......

*sigh

Good thing I already had mine ready!

I signed up because I have become addicted to this site, but tell me, how does signing up prevent a troll from commenting? One can sign up with any number of names?

Posted by: erp [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 6, 2004 06:29 AM

Erp-

In response to your question, it isn't foolproof, but registering is more trouble than many trolls want to go through. Also, Typekey allows Bill the option to preview comments from new registrants before they go public, so if someone leaves an obnoxious comment he can delete it before we ever see it and ban that username from the site. If he bans them each time and forces them to keep signing up for new names, it gets inconvenient and they'll most likely move on and bother someone else.

Hope this makes things easier for you.
It is nice that I can use the same
registration on so many sites. ;-)

It's not like it's hard to sign up anyway. =p

Posted by: Elric [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 6, 2004 11:59 AM

No problem.

Easy as 1,2,3.

Posted by: jmflynny [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 6, 2004 12:59 PM

Typekey is probably loving this ;)

Posted by: Lysander [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 6, 2004 01:42 PM

Testing... Easy to sign up but suddenly the popup comment section is all out of wack and can't be resized.

Posted by: Oki [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2004 12:25 AM

Well, The typekey registration is pretty painless...

Not too shabby, and you get a "one-stop" registration as well...

Posted by: Casey [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 7, 2004 03:51 AM

It's a sad commentary but you have to save your website from the spammers.
