Comment Registration
Posted by Bill A bizarrely persistent spammer/troll has finally forced me to take the plunge and start comment registration. Hopefully, I'll have the system set up in the next few days, so heads up - you'll need to register with a username and password in order to participate in discussions. In the meantime, please ignore anyone that insists on flooding my comments section with links. UPDATE: It will be Typekey. Posted by Bill at October 31, 2004 11:47 PM | TrackBack (24) CommentsAttempting to prove Bill right (because that's our job), I wish to mention that for me, personally, NaNoWriMo starts in just under 30 minutes. What is NaNoWriMo, you ask? It stands for National Novel Writing Month. The goal is to write 50,000 words of a fiction novel between November 1 and November 30. Hope my head is still above water enough to remember to register for the comment section. Posted by: Thad O at November 1, 2004 12:33 AM How about TypeKey? Posted by: mcg at November 1, 2004 12:58 AM I am registered with typekey a lot of blogs are using it now, but no matter whatever method Bill finds easiest is fine with me. Posted by: Dan Kauffman at November 1, 2004 03:30 AM But what about those of us who are looking for C..h..eap.. V!@gr+a? What about my needs? Posted by: Sharp as a Marble at November 1, 2004 07:36 AM What about my needs? Uh, don't ask, don't tell? Posted by: Noah D at November 1, 2004 07:49 AM good, in the next few days. That will be very timely, for well ... Good thing that Osama only maked tapes. No blog comments. But if Bush would have caught OBL, then we would not need to worry about that. Would we? Posted by: Sam Miller at November 1, 2004 09:02 AM Oh, Sam! how nice to see you over here, too! Are you trolling the blogs to post the same comment in as many places as possible? At any rate, Bill- go for it! I drop by your blog maybe 3 times a day (when I'm poli-surfing) for excellent coverage and info. Anything which will make your job easier will end up being a benefit to us all.... Posted by: Romeocat at November 1, 2004 09:26 AM Please wait until this election is settled. If Bush wins, I don't need to spend all my time surfing the net because I'll know he's in charge, so I don't have to be. If Kerry wins. I don't need to surf the net because it won't make any difference. It'll mean the forces of corruption and hate have won and so be it. In any case, why should we law abiding posters have the bother of registering to avoid being assaulted by the law breakers. It reminds me of those awful TV ads of some years back, "Lock you car, don't make a good boy go bad."
Posted by: erp at November 1, 2004 09:44 AM Sorry to hear that a good Gator like you (me too) are being pestered by trolls. One would think visitors would have the decency not to crap all over your house ... but I guess manners are out of fashion. Things will improve soon - Darth Visor is going to return (I think!). Posted by: BD at November 1, 2004 09:56 AM Jeez, I wish you could edit your own comments - got a tense wrong. :( Posted by: BD at November 1, 2004 09:57 AM Bill: You've done a great job reporting. You're spammer/troll is probably just a democratic "crabs in a basket"; just jealous of your good journalism and success. Keep up the good work. Posted by: Justin Brown at November 1, 2004 10:05 AM Erp...get over yourself. This isn't about you. Bill...I stand ready to register. Bring it on. Posted by: jmflynny at November 1, 2004 10:38 AM Your spammer probably just got tired of registering to vote Democratic as Haywood Jablome from 123 Biteme Street over & over and decided on a different form of mischief. Posted by: Dave at November 1, 2004 10:45 AM Bill, is there a simple way to block IP addresses or similar? Maybe the troll would like to receive 1,000,000 emails from an autoresponder offering penile enlargement triggered by each post, or something as beneficial. Whatever method you choose is fine with me. I don't post often, but I enjoy reading your articles and the discussions. Posted by: TEWSPilot at November 1, 2004 10:49 AM These spammers use zombies to post. Block 10 addresses and tomorrow they are back with 20. Registration increases the pain for them to where it isn't very practical. Posted by: Dan S at November 1, 2004 11:55 AM I'm in the process of upgrade/comment reg too...old Bob finally wore me down with 1800 spams in a single day. Posted by: feste at November 1, 2004 12:42 PM BD, Bill's a Gator?!? I knew there was a reason I love this blog...that rocks. And yes the visored-one will be back...I can just feel it. Posted by: Paul B. at November 1, 2004 01:10 PM Thanks, Class of '97. Posted by: Bill from INDC at November 1, 2004 01:41 PM |
