Princeton Review Global Test Tip, #32

Posted by Bill

"In order to pass the global test, the prepared student must be willing to cheat:"

THE ROLE of Kofi Annan in the Iraqi oil-for-food scandal is to be investigated after it emerged that the United Nations secretary-general was in charge of some of the most controversial aspects of the discredited humanitarian programme. Annan, 66, the Ghanaian-born head of the UN and Nobel peace prize winner who is due to retire in 2006, is “co-operating” with the independent commission set up to look into the scandal. He has agreed to waive his diplomatic immunity and face legal action if any wrongdoing is uncovered.

Curious. Just who or what at the UN has the power to legally sanction anyone (let us just suppose Kofi had his hand in the till). How is he to be tried? Where does he do his jail time.

If he waved immunity, I assume the United States (where the crime effectively took place).

Maybe Elliot Spitzer could go after him after he finishes with Wall Street and the insurance companies. That would put another feather in his cap when running for Governor.

I doubt he will waive his immunity though-that is one problem with diplomatic immunity-you can steal billions of dollars from a program, and get off scot free, and the liberals won't say word, since you weren't the president of Enron.

It is stuff like this that reaffirms completely my lack of confidence that the UN can succeed at anything.

Re-read the excerpt.

Oops that is what I get for skimming, although I still don't believe he will waive it.

But if he does, I guess it does beg the question then where the trial is and where he serves any sentence, and the other people involved for that matter.

I sort of suspect this ends up getting buried anyway, and if they still haven't tried Milosovich I am thinking it will be 20 years before they get around to Oil for Food at the Hague.

If the charges are true, heads should roll for the oil-for-food scandal. I was outraged by Enron, outraged by Halliburton, and think the screws should be taken to whatever parties were involved in bilking/ undermining the OFF program as well.

Hmmmm .. what were you outraged about with Halliburton?

Be careful, this is a trap.

Posted by: Bill from INDC at October 24, 2004 09:52 PM

War profiteering.

Most likely, the ICC at the Hague--although I'm not sure about the mechanism for "enforcing" incarceration/punishment--it does seem that some low level butchers in the post Yugoslavia massacres are being held somewhere--perhaps Belgium

This is highly hypothetical--however--remember, if frogs had wings, they wouldn't bump their asses when they hopped...

War profiteering.

Not the trap I was laying braed crumbs in front of, but ... go research Halliburton's net operating profit/loss for the last four quarters. Let me know what you find.

These are the pertinent links on the first page of the Google search I ran on "Halliburton Profit". It appears that their involvement in Iraq has rewarded them handsomely.

The UN is worse than useless...it is a force for the negative in this world.

We should all be mad as hell at the UN and determined to either reform it or abolish it.

The Washington Times Kerry story is up:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20041024-110609-9428r.htm

It's Christmas in Cambodia again:

"U.N. ambassadors from several nations are disputing assertions by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry that he met for hours with all members of the U.N. Security Council just a week before voting in October 2002 to authorize the use of force in Iraq.
An investigation by The Washington Times reveals that while the candidate did talk for an unspecified period to at least a few members of the panel, no such meeting, as described by Mr. Kerry on a number of occasions over the past year, ever occurred."

Dude, Princeton Review sucks!

Kaplan is far superior. Even if we are owned by the Washington Post. :(
