Local Radio Affiliate Dumps CBS News

Posted by Bill

The affiliate is located in Bryan, Texas:

Local radio station WTAW will sever its ties with CBS News because of negative reaction to the network’s recent news coverage of President Bush’s military record, the station said Tuesday.

WTAW, which is located at 1620 AM, will ditch its CBS affiliation and begin airing national news broadcasts from ABC within 90 days, station manager Ben Downs said.
...
“I don’t think CBS has a defensible position on this,” Downs said. “I feel a little checking would have found these were old claims. Even I can look at the memo and tell it didn’t come from a Selectric typewriter.”

And let's not forget Dr. Bouffard's final statement:

"For your information, it appears that the Selectric Composer could not have created the memos. See http://ibmcomposer.org."

UPDATE: Reader Peter Sheeran adds some political/geographic context:

Let me give you some background on Bryan, Texas. Bryan is literally next to the college town of College Station Texas so they are basically considered the same, except College Station is a nicer area. But as far as TV goes, they basically are the same area, also known as the Brazos Valley. College Station happens to be the home of Texas A&M University (where I graduated from) which also happens to be, according to the below ranking, the most conservative school in the country. It's also home to the George Herbert Walker Bush Presidential Library and hopefully the George W Bush Presidential Library when that time comes. So in short the Bryan/College Station community is VERY conservative so I'm not at all surprised about this news.

As an aside, WTAW was also the first station to broadcast live coverage of a football game, between Texas A&M and the University of Texas. can't remember the year, though--1909?

More geography and history here. Huntsville, Texas is about 45 minutes east of Bryan-College Station. It is the location of Sam Houston State University and the Texas Department of Corrections Headquarters. Dan Rather graduated from Sam Houston State University (I forget the year). It shows that even places he might think "Pro Dan", that is NOT the case. As far as I know, he has never had any ties to the Texas Department of Corrections, but maybe that will change.

(Different Pete than the one above) Huntsville is also where Texas executes people :) Surely not one of Rather's selling points on his former Alma Mater.
