Very Busy

Posted by Bill

Light posting today.

A couple of questions for the day:

1. Who is the most fair and accurate national TV news anchor? (this includes cable, but not local)

2. Print reporter?

Discuss amongst yourselves ...

UPDATE: At the end of the day, I'll give you the correct answers.

UPDATE: If you pick Brit Hume, please pick an alternate as well.

TV - Jim Lehrer.

Ya he's no Bill Orielly or Dan Rather, but I think he has establish his brand as being fair not especially cutting edge.

Print - not sure, does internet count?

Posted by: Jace at September 22, 2004 07:57 AM

Brit Hume, no contest.

Posted by: Chuck at September 22, 2004 08:10 AM

Dang. Chuck beat me to it. Print? Isikoff maybe?

Posted by: Steve at September 22, 2004 08:17 AM

Brit Hume - I have to agree. The best right now.

Posted by: Shannon Woodcock at September 22, 2004 08:19 AM

1. Dan Rather
2. Dana Milbank

Oops, I see you said trust the most. My bad.

Seriously, trust has to be earned, and there's no one of national stature in television or print media who has managed to earn my trust.

Posted by: Boyd at September 22, 2004 08:20 AM

1. Brit Hume
2. Don't read the stinky papers...they're for the puppy

Posted by: El Jefe at September 22, 2004 08:20 AM

None of them, really. I prefer to get my news through the web aggregators like Google News or Yahoo. Google is especially valuable, because I can get the story from multiple sources. After that, it's places like Instapundit and LGF, which will often have more obscure stuff that I may have missed. Then, finally, I begin to get the picture. TV news is mostly for things like live coverage or really cool video.

Ironically, the process is somewhat slower than simply listening to someone tell me what's going on, but leaves me loads more informed. Once you get used to it, it's hard to listen to any TV coverage without realizing just how thin it really is.

Posted by: E. Nough at September 22, 2004 08:21 AM

1. Chris Wallace - he is balanced in his reporting and goes after both sides equally.

2. Print: No one.

Posted by: Dignan at September 22, 2004 08:24 AM

1. That guy on SNL
2. Bill Amend (of Foxtrot fame)

And I'm serious.....

Posted by: Sharp as a Marble at September 22, 2004 08:37 AM

In either category, no single one.

Posted by: Noah Doyle at September 22, 2004 08:47 AM

Tempted to say Bill Murray and Gilda Radner but that was decades ago and a version of "Point/Counterpoint"

Seriously, Brit Hume is the only answer.

Posted by: Jim Z at September 22, 2004 09:01 AM

Hume in a heartbeat

Posted by: heptacableguy at September 22, 2004 09:08 AM

Hume and Memeorandum

Posted by: Santay at September 22, 2004 09:16 AM

1. Chris Wallace or Jim Lehrer (Wallace doesn't necessarily qualify as an anchor).

2. Michael Dobbs and/or Howard Kurtz. Slight edge to Dobbs who seems to always buck the liberal media bent of the day without sounding like he's being contrary. Rowan Scarborough for the WashTimes is consistently voted as one of the most balanced in blind reader tests.

Posted by: MichaelW at September 22, 2004 09:24 AM

TV-Lehrer
Print-John Burns, NYT

Posted by: Blue at September 22, 2004 09:24 AM

{Begin gratuitous INDC Bill Pander Mode)

MORT KONDRACKE!

(End gratuitous INDC Bill Pander Mode)

Posted by: Qur'an Pundit at September 22, 2004 09:27 AM

Mort's not an anchor! But if he was, he'd be the best damn anchor in the world!

Posted by: Bill from INDC Journal at September 22, 2004 09:31 AM

Brit Hume

Posted by: tb at September 22, 2004 09:32 AM

Jim Lehrer???? No way. Try watching him before your evening cocktail.

Posted by: erp at September 22, 2004 09:37 AM

Brit Hume is my hero. I am a Hume-aniac.

As an alternate I would say Chris Wallace or Jeff Greenfield.

Print: Burns or Isakoff, but this choice is like choosing pistols or swords.

Posted by: Misspent at September 22, 2004 09:43 AM

Besides Hume, I also like Tony Snow and Chris Matthews....er, uh, I mean Wallace.

Posted by: jmflynny at September 22, 2004 10:32 AM

Hey btw, thanks for the donation, jmflynny, my thank you e-mail to you bounced ...

Posted by: Bill from INDC Journal at September 22, 2004 10:33 AM

Bill, you said pick an alternate. My first thought was "You mean there's another anchor besides Britt Hume?"

I guess if I had to pick , I'd say Glenn Reynolds. He acts, for my part, as a news anchor to me. Britt's the onl one I watch on TV, if I watch TV.

Posted by: Steve at September 22, 2004 10:40 AM

Lou Dobbs!!!
Chris Mathews!!

Sorry I can't think of one who doesn't show his bias either right or left.

Posted by: Jane at September 22, 2004 10:41 AM

Brit Hume

followed by Chris Wallace and Tony Snow as alternates

Posted by: Wicht at September 22, 2004 10:48 AM

Rumsfeld.

They'd have to have a crash cart on hand for the guests though.

Posted by: Al at September 22, 2004 10:49 AM

I know he's not really an anchor, but I like Bill O'Rielly. But if I've got to pick an anchor, I'll go with Chris Wallace.

As for print -- it goes straight to the birdcage and I don't even have a bird.

Posted by: gabe at September 22, 2004 10:52 AM

Television:
1. Brit Hume
2. Shepard Smith

Print:
Almost anybody at the "Washington Times."

My favorite on-air "biased" commentator?
Nancy Grace of Court TV!

Posted by: Stephen at September 22, 2004 10:53 AM

Not a single female? Unbelievable. Both of these are anchors, and I can watch both and be totally ignorant as to their political leanings. Not to mention that they're both quite visually pleasing.

1. Jane Skinner
2. Dori Alexander

Posted by: Sciszor at September 22, 2004 11:23 AM

Oh, my bad, I guess someone did say Gilda Radner. :-)

Posted by: Sciszor at September 22, 2004 11:24 AM

Not even close...Laurie Dhue.

OK Britt Hume and Shepard Smith are unbiased but Laurie Dhue is clearly the most talented news anchor. She should have a larger show on Fox.

Posted by: Mahatma at September 22, 2004 11:31 AM

1. Brit Hume (alternate: Chris Wallace)

2. Byron York.

Posted by: D Carter at September 22, 2004 11:52 AM

Definitely Burns among the print media. The guy is totally fearless. The best TV guy is Russert, but he's not an anchor. Lester Holt of MSNBC isn't too bad.

Posted by: Crank at September 22, 2004 11:56 AM

1. Brit Hume. And he is the consummate gentleman.

2. Print: Michael Dobbs of the Washington Post. Very unbiased. Likes the hunt but not for partisan reasons.

Posted by: somerville at September 22, 2004 12:00 PM

Brit Hume would be #1 still.

Tony Snow for alternate.

Posted by: Chuck at September 22, 2004 12:03 PM

On-Air: Brit Hume
Print: No longer contending.

Blogs: jim geraghty

Posted by: PajamaGuy at September 22, 2004 12:12 PM

geraghty, is that you?

Posted by: Bill from INDC Journal at September 22, 2004 12:25 PM

Hmmmmm, does anyone watch anything beyond FNC?

Me neither.
Hume, followed by Wallace/Snow

Posted by: azlibertarian at September 22, 2004 12:35 PM

I watch CNN in the mornings. I get the impression that the Fox & Friends anchors are functional illiterates.

Posted by: Bill from INDC Journal at September 22, 2004 12:40 PM

News Anchor: Brit Hume

Print Media: My answer is "The entire staff of the Wall Street Journal", both hard news and the editorial page balance each other nicely.

Posted by: zp at September 22, 2004 12:48 PM

Print - James Lileks of course.

TV - Have to go with C-Span instead of (note did not say raTHer than) any individual.

Posted by: max at September 22, 2004 12:49 PM

Brit Hume without a doubt.
Tony Snow for alternate.

Best print would have to be Mark Steyn

Posted by: lcd56 at September 22, 2004 12:56 PM

Laurie Dhue-hooo-hooo!

Posted by: Tony Brusletten at September 22, 2004 12:57 PM

Well, he's not an anchor, but john Stossel is one of the few reporters on TV, major networks or cable, for whom I have a high degeree of respect.

Posted by: Cateagle at September 22, 2004 01:16 PM

Brit Hume, Tony Snow - absolutely. Followed by other fox subs.

Sorry, can't think of anyone on the Big Three, CNN, or MSNBC worthy of my trust. I suppose, if push comes to shove, Tom Brokaw is quite better than the others.

As for print - why, you, of course. :-)

Posted by: Battsman at September 22, 2004 01:47 PM

Ok, after looking over the other comments (um, would have smart to do that first, I suppose), I have to concur that Jane Skinner and Laurie Dhue are awesome.

Rotating coverage with Brit Hume, Tony Snow, Chris Wallace, Jane Skinner, and Laurie Dhue - that would rock.

Posted by: Battsman at September 22, 2004 01:51 PM

Bill: I agree, I work in a nameless DC area federal agency building, and Fox n' Friends are piped through every single morning. Fox and Friends talking about current events is like listening to my co-workers talking about computers:

"I bought a computer yesterday, it has uh, about 900 megahertz of ram"

Everyone else:

Brit Hume is a'ight, but Tony Snow? How can you even pretend to call him the face of objective, unbiased reporting? The man sits in for Rush regularly. I'm a fairly conservative guy - and I'm not trying to equivocate, but someone like Snow performing an interview on a Democrat is not unlike Rather interviewing a Republican.

At least nobody mistook Hannity for an anchor. :-D

Posted by: Sciszor at September 22, 2004 02:06 PM

You're quite welcome. I'm sorry it couldn't be more right now.

And, yep...you just reminded me. I forgot to switch over my email address at PayPal.

Posted by: jmflynny at September 22, 2004 02:28 PM

Brit Hume; Tony Snow; Jim Engle and the Fox News crew in general.

I haven't listened to Martha ? enough but for the little I have, I have liked her.

Posted by: Diddy at September 22, 2004 03:15 PM

Britt Hume and Lester Holt

Posted by: SAM at September 22, 2004 03:17 PM

Print - Issikoff (sp?), Dobbs

Posted by: sam at September 22, 2004 03:18 PM

Print - Issikoff (sp?), Dobbs

Posted by: sam at September 22, 2004 03:18 PM

TV: Brit Hume, Shepard Smith
Print: Mark Steyn, Thomas Sowell

Posted by: David R. Block at September 22, 2004 03:20 PM

Surprisingly enough I agree with the one peson who dared include an MSNBC anchor. I agree that Lester Holt is pretty balanced. I'll go with Shepard Smith and Lester Holt.

As far as AM is concerned, I can't stand ANY of those Ninnies. Cold Pizza on ESPN2. You haven't lived until you've laughed your rear off at Kit Hoover trying to link sports to the RNC....

Posted by: caltechgirl at September 22, 2004 03:24 PM

TV: Charles Osgood
Print: Michael Dobbs, possibly Ron Fournier.

Posted by: pennywit at September 22, 2004 03:24 PM

Brit Hume, Lester Holt and Shepard Smith; perhaps three of the best ever beamed from vaporville. Printwise, Byron York, Steven F. Hayes.. There is some exciting talent breaking through once you get away from the Luvox Lounge of the MSM illuminati.

Posted by: willem at September 22, 2004 06:31 PM

Brit Hume
Tony Snow
Shepard Smith

and for dessert.... :)

Patti Ann Browne

Posted by: mannie at September 22, 2004 07:02 PM

TV: I gotta go with the crowd on Hume. Alternate: Hume in a different suit.

Print: Does Christopher Hitchens count as print?

Posted by: Evilwhiteguy at September 23, 2004 02:39 AM

Actually, Bill...it seems that my entire email account had dropped from the Comcast system. It has been repaired now.

Thanks for the heads up!
