The NY Sun writes about a USA Today investigation:

The chairman of Boston University’s Department of Journalism, Robert Zelnick, said CBS should at least launch an investigation. CBS said it has no plans to do so.

“USA Today is following the responsible course in reexamining their reporting and it would be nice if CBS did the same,” said Mr. Zelnick. “If [USA Today] backs off the credibility of these documents, CBS will regret their stand. They will have made themselves the story and they will have completely isolated themselves. What will be their defense then?”

Mr. Zelnick, an ABC News correspondent for 21 years until his retirement, said news organizations that make highprofile mistakes can often salvage their reputations by offering a “full and fair accounting” as soon as possible.

He said Mr. Rather “has the whiff of combat in his nostrils” and does not recognize the damage he will be doing to CBS News’s franchise by not engaging “thoughtful critics.”

I'll say. Dan Rather's making himself into a J-School course on inappropriate conduct in journalism. Suggested title:

"What not to do when a source burns you like the tarmac of a Laredo parking lot: Dan Rather 101"

It is interesting that CBS cannot be on time in releasing its statement.

Also, as others have pointed out, Rather didn't get duped, he tried to dupe the public.

By now, with the ABC report about the document experts who warned CBS, it is clear that Rather deliberately went ahead with a dubious story.

Why? My guess is that he was under tremendous pressure from the Kerry Kamp/DNC camp to come out with his story, to coincide with their latest counterattack against Bush.

Rather was clearly under pressure to get out this story last week because Kerry needed something badly to interrupt the time after the smashing successful GOP convention and prior to the 9/11 anniversary. The timing was everything. Rather clearly rushed that story to press and it was so blatantly a hit job on Bush for the Kerry campaign. Funny how word of the DNC 'fortunate son' campaign started to leak as well as the emergence of the 'Texans for Truth'.

There seems to be some rather strong circumstantial evidence of coordination between the DNC, Kerry campaign, some of the 527s, CBS 'News', Boston Globe, and NY Times. As long as Rather continues to stonewall then there may be enough pressure for some enterprising mainstream journalist to seize the moment and bring down the entire operation. OK, I kid. But still, a lot of this seems like more than mere coincidence.

My guess is that the delay is related to the lawyers for CBS vetting the statement: CBS' counsel, Floyd Abrams (though a partisan Democrat) is a very good lawyer. Having been in meetings where disclosure was negotiated between the business types and the lawyers, I suspect there's are real donnybrook going on between a lawyer who's not willing to be his license and someone at Black Rock.

The obvious question is why the former secretary to LtCol Killian was not interviewed prior to airing the 60 minutes shows. The answer is also obvious.

...jokes are already coming out about Rather handcuffing himself to the set with a bomb belt around his waist and Rather being seen in a white Bronco driving slowly down the Interstate with news teams in pursuit (bomb belt and saying CBS has 60 minutes to give him back his job), etc. He has become a cartoon, and he is turning CBS into one.

- The chum is in the water...the quarter is in the slot...Like so many big hard gumballs the CBS oldline media mavins are going down...With congress jumping into the fray its hard to see them not biting it hard in the end....what the hell can they be thinking....or is it that revealing the truth and the sources is unimaginably worse than journalistic suicide...and if so thats scarry...because it implies this leads back to the doorstep of a presidential candidate and could well mean destroying the whole election process for this cycle with no realistic chance for the Dem's to field a viable alternate candidate...worrysome at this point....

Update: Congressman Cox is now stating things more stridently saying "There is growing evidence that CBS is complicit in an attemp to defraud the American electorate and effect the outcome of a National Election"....

- Susan Estrich (with a little smirk) is calling for the "DNC to moveon ... quit beating a dead horse...Shes calling for Dem supporters to pick up the phone and call their comittee people and scream..."...(sound familiar - kind of late in the day susan) - ( after her own version of a political Titanic back in 88 no wonder shes chortling )...Everytime the DNC attack dogs step in their own doodoo they always want to "put all this behind us and discuss the issues"....five minutes later they air the latest rounds of attack ads....

CBS updates story

But it doesn't look like they've added much.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/06/politics/main641481.shtml

As far as I can tell this was the only significant add:

Killian's former secretary, 86-year-old Marian Carr Knox, also questioned the documents in an interview with The Dallas Morning News.

"These are not real," Knox said in a story posted Tuesday on the newspaper's Web site. "They're not what I typed, and I would have typed them for him."

Knox told the newspaper she did not recall typing the memos, but that they echoed Killian's views on Mr. Bush. She said he retained memos for a personal "cover his back" file he kept in a locked drawer of his desk, but she was not sure what happened to them when he died in 1984.

CBS News spokeswoman Sandra Genelius said CBS did not believe Knox was a documents expert and that the network believes the documents are genuine.

"It is notable that she confirms the content of the documents, which was the primary focus of our story in the first place," Genelius said.

hey Bill, for the stinking life of me, i cannot understand what they-CBS--are doing.

this story is truly labyrynthe. I have never covered a story which had such an utterly....confusing "protagonist"....USA Today initiated a full-court analysis of the docs in its posession...which is what we are trained to do...CBS is playing this like Stalingrad.

Baffling. thanks for the link. Roddy Boyd

The confluence of Dan Rather and white Bronco brought back a memory. I was watching CBS when the white Bronco finally stopped at OJ's house. The sunlight was beginning to dim. Dan Rather was giving the play-by-play. Dan breathlessly intoned, "It looks like someone is going behind the Bronco.". Connie Chung corrected, "That's the rear tire, Dan."
