CBS Statement at Noon

Bets? Will they still do the unthinkable?

(Dean's taking bets as well, though he missed the third option mentioned above)

UPDATE: CBS's Schieffer tries to stop the madness:

CBS News' Bob Schieffer said Tuesday he hopes the network does more reporting to definitively prove the authenticity of memos 60 Minutes II received about President Bush's service in the Air National Guard.

"I think we have to find some way to show our viewers they are not forgeries,'' Schieffer, CBS' chief Washington correspondent and host of the network's "Face the Nation,'' said at a news conference in Sioux City. "I don't know how we're going to do that without violating the confidentiality of sources.''
...
"He is very confident of his sources,'' said Schieffer, who has talked to Rather daily during the flap. "He says he is absolutely convinced these documents are real.''

If Dan's got an unimpeachable source with impressive credentials against Bush, then so be it for us Bush supporters, trot him out. The docs themselves are forgeries.

Questions About Bush Memos Linger

(CBS/AP) CBS News continued to defend the legitimacy of its recent story about President Bush's Vietnam-era service in the Texas Air National Guard, even as two experts it hired to examine records CBS used told ABC they could not vouch for their veracity.

Meanwhile, a former secretary in the guard said Tuesday she believed the documents in question were fake, although they accurately reflected the thoughts of one of Mr. Bush's commanders.

This is just bizarre.

We'll know they may be on the right track if they all come out in their pajamas.

CBS is over. Even Jay Leno was referrng to them as See BS last night.... One would just wish that they would do the honorable thing at least......

No.

Posted by: BigFire at September 15, 2004 10:29 AM

I think the fact that some of the bloggers who helped break this story are making the rounds on TV interviews is another indication that many in the media are coming to accept the plain fact that these documents are forgeries.

I do hope that the fair minded pundits who comment on this whole affair will also make the case as to why this is important. I've seen some of the liberal pundits already trying to downplay the significance of this, as if this is just a debate about esoterics of typesetting, and not about the fundamentals of what a trustworthy media means to a democracy.
Of course, there is also the issue of who gave the memos to CBS, and that fact that the campaign of a presidential candidate passed forgeries to defame his opponent. That is also huge.

That being said, I don't have much faith that CBS will issue its mea culpa today. I think, like most criminals and drug addicts, they will only "fess up" when they hit rock bottom. That will come when all of big media gives this story front page significance, and/or when enough people force the issue through contacting CBS, CBS affiliates, and CBS sponsors.

they are going to stone wall until the cops come and investigate them for fraud.
Boy, would it be rich to see Rather led away in handcuffs and/or wrestled to the ground before he can get to the shredder to destroy the evidence :)

When ABC revealed last night that the two memo's from USA Today (that weren't included in the 60 Minutes II hatchet piece) were independently debunked by expert Amy Mills and one other expert, it was officially GAME OVER for CBS. The revealing was extra-topical...see Allahpundit.com for links, or Lucianne.com in 'Must Reads' for link to thread in Free Republic. CBS went fishing for authentication of 6 memo's. They solicited different experts in order to increase the likelihood of success. In the end they went with the 4 memo's they liked best. It proves malice and fraud. The bet? CBS comes clean at noon (buh-bye Dan).

CBS will defend once again, while backtracking just a bit with clever language. This seems certain, because the only way to explain their behavior over the last several days is to assume that they're both clueless and foolish. Why should they stop now?

Posted by: Just Some Guy at September 15, 2004 10:51 AM

I still don't see why CBS won't just let this blow over.

Posted by: Jim at September 15, 2004 10:55 AM

Because we won't let them Jim. this has gained critical momentum and the other news organizations are turning on them. It would effectively destroy CBS News to shirk responsibility.

Posted by: Bill from INDC Journal at September 15, 2004 11:01 AM

They are going to shore up their existing hole in order to more effectively dig deeper.

I'm afraid this startling new development may turn things around: Glennon, Katz Win Nobel Prize in Forensic Typography . . .

There's no such thing as an unimpeachable source.

Posted by: SarahW at September 15, 2004 11:14 AM

Every leak from inside CBS has indicated that they are in serious bunker mode, and for every fax or email they get critisizing the memos I'm sure they get one from the kos/atrios/DU crowd urging them to stand up for the "truth", so I don't see them backing down unless they've gotten a serious talking-to from either their affiliates or advertisers -- at this point I don't think even the Kerry campaign could convince them to come clean and end the bleeding, due to the legal and liability problems such an admission would cause.

They're gonna claim the story is true, haul out Killian's secretary, Hodges, and anybody else that can back them up that the story is true, and will claim that the rightwing bloggers criticism of the memos is just a desperate distraction and further proof of the right's fascism, attempting to silence CBS's brave attempt to take on an evil and corrupt administration.

Saraw: Except for Clinton, of course.

Posted by: michael parker at September 15, 2004 11:17 AM

The credibility of CBS has been damaged beyond repair and the only hope they have is the short memory of the American people. They will just try to stonewall until it hopefully fades to black. I hope this stays alive for awhile.

Schieffer is an idiot. He can't see past what people tell him to believe. I watch most of the Sunday political shows, but I had to stop watching Face the Nation because I couldn't stand him any longer. And I have a strong stomach, because I can listen to Begala, Carville, and Juan Williams.

Posted by: pudge at September 15, 2004 11:40 AM

FWIW, I already blocked my local affiliate off of my TV, and DH won't buy any more add time on any CBS station.

Posted by: SarahW at September 15, 2004 11:44 AM

I guess that isn't Attention Deficit Time he won't be buying, but advertising time.

Posted by: SarahW at September 15, 2004 11:46 AM

CBS is not going to back down. They are going to paint this as a disagreement among document experts and then argue that 'other evidence' makes their original case about Bush.

Also I expect them to slam a lot of the bloggers and independent experts as being 'Republican partisans' by selecting out a few who can be documented as GOP supporters.

No way is CBS going to admit they were exposed by non-journalists wearing pajamas.

Upon further thought, one prediction: they call LGF a hate site. They would stoop that low.

Text of CBS statement: We ran out of gas. We, We had a flat tire. We didn't have enough money for cab fare. Our tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole our car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts. IT WASN'T OUR FAULT, WE SWEAR TO GOD.

CBS News has determined that it wishes to end its existence by impersonating a high-speed, high-altitude lawn dart.

Random Wish: I would love to listen in at the interview between CBS News/60 Minutes II producers and the CBS lawyers. My guess is the lawyers are laying out, explicitly, the liability that could accrue and the chances of that accrual, in a desparate attempt to break through the biggest wall of denial seen by humankind in the past 60 years.
