Expert Shopping? (UPDATED)
Posted by Bill Some of my new readers might not get the impression from reading this week's coverage, but I'm not usually moved by whispers of conspiracy theories. Which is why it surprised me when I initially bought the forgery theory at Powerline and felt the need to move on it. And let's face it; taking the time to investigate all of the conspiracy theories on a Free Republic board would be a full-time job. Those disclaimers aside, I get the distinct feeling that Allah may have added a valid new wrinkle to this story. These possibilities are starting to make my head spin. UPDATE: Go check the post again, he's got updates that buttress the claim. Posted by Bill at September 15, 2004 07:34 AM | TrackBack (0) CommentsI was reading and watching last night as this developed on FR. I had the distinct feeling I was watching history being made. Utterly amazing... Posted by: Jeff Rosenquist at September 15, 2004 08:25 AM So, CBS intentionally "created" false news. They knew these were lies, they knew they were lying. They thought they would get away with it, because, after all, who would catch them? They didn't count on the Internet, the blogosphere, FreeRepublic, INDC Journal, Allah, the on-line Selectric museum, or any of the rest of it. But that raises some very ugly questions. The Internet didn't exist as it does now, with the blogosphere, etc., 10 years ago. Even five years ago, or even three years ago, the blogosphere didn't have the capability, the critical mass to accomplish what you have accomplished today. Sure, Drudge caught the president in lies. And the MSM would have ignored it, if the Internet hadn't forced the issue. But the MSM didn't go through the trouble (at least as far as we know at this point) to manufacture evidence to defend him. They were dragged kicking and screaming onto the story, but they didn't (as far as we know) actively create an alternative reality, physical evidence and all, to cover it all up. So, the question is: what other big lies has Dan Rather told us over the years? Or Peter Jennings or Brokaw? Or Katherine Graham et. al? We see the arrogance of the mainstream media. We see the bias. Now we see the methodology, the willingness to deceive, to defraud, to dissemble, to outright lie like rugs. Why should we believe this is the first time? Or that only Dan Rather (and Andrew Heyward, and the Mapes woman, and Moonves, and the whole CBS crew) is a liar? The real challenge now isn't to uncover one lying swine at one lying MSM outlet. The real challenge is to expose the whole rotting system of lies and fraud in the MSM. That leads to one more question. Can the new media do it? Posted by: david at September 15, 2004 08:39 AM I'm actually hoping someone e-mails me and explains how I'm wrong. The story seems almost too good to be true, such that I feel like I must have made a logical error somewhere. And you know what else? I don't want it to be true. I don't want to believe that a major network news organization, biased though it may be, would have gone so far as to engage in willful deception. I really hope I'm wrong. Sincerely. Posted by: Allah at September 15, 2004 10:56 AM Allah, as much as I'd love to see CBS go out of business, I have to agree. I don't want it to be true because then how much of our media history is based on lies like this? And of this magnitude? That is what's scary. Maybe they've pulled so many hoaxes that they just assumed there wasn't a need any more to do a good job covering their tracks.
